Preparing baking tins

I was surprised to see a bread recipe yesterday which stated "grease and flour a loaf tin". I have never ever floured a tin or tray when baking bread and loaves just tip out with no trouble.

It set me thinking though; I've never actually known the rule for greasing / greasing and flouring / just bunging a mixture into a dry tin. Is there a simple rule? What do you do?

I usually use some spray oil in a bread tin, but I never wash them.

For other tins I will give a squirt round with the spray oil and line the bottom with baking parchment, and I do wash them.
