Title should read: Please help we are cooking with no kitchen.

At long last I'm renovating our kitchen :T, at present all the cupboards have been ripped out, the waters been disconnected as well as the gas, so we now have nowhere to cook.

Using our initiative, we have set up camp in the living room.

We have the fridge freezer in here, and a piece of worktop on top of storage boxes at above waist height, we alo have a kettle, a toaster, a steamer and a slow cooker to see us through untill the kitchen is complete. (As I work 12 hour days and nights this could be about a month, eek)

So what I am asking for is some advice as to what meals we can cook using the previously mentioned appliances, we are looking at going to the abattoir tomorrow and wondered what would be the best meat to buy to see us through as we putting together a meals plan to help us budget.

Chicken fillets are at the top of our list as we are having a steamed Sunday dinner tomorrow :)

We will be feeding 2 adults and 2 children, our eldest is 11 & our youngest is 6.

Than you in advance
Chris.

  • Vegetable shepherds pie - cook the filling (veggies, stock, a little wine, lentils, that sort of thing) in the slow cooker, steam the potatoes then mash, assemble to look like shepherds pie on the plate, just without the brown top!
For starch-y things use couscous or thin rice noodles in place of rice and pasta as these can be made with just boiled water.
Maybe get some toastie bags for the toaster if you don't have them already? I've heard of people cooking other things in them. You could cut open pitas, fill with passata, herbs and mozzarella (plus anything else you fancy) and toast in the bag to make a sort of calzone pizza.

you could also get one of those camping stoves that run off a small gas bottle.

  • Slow cooker:-
Curry, spag bol, meatballs in tomato sauce, chilli con carne, stews, roasts.
For pasta dishes, add pasta near to end of cooking, you may have to add more liquid.

    Steamer:-
Fish, chicken, potatoes, rice, vegetable, boiled eggs.

Be aware that you may be very well tempted to go down the takeaway route. (Have been there more than once). Weigh up the possible costs and think whether it may be worth adding something else to your cooking tools, such as a microwave, halogen oven or mini hob. If you do go down this route, obviously would be best to choose something that you could use in the future.
  • Don't forget 3 minute noodles which cook with water from the kettle.

  • Thankyou for your replies, some good info to help us, much appreciated.

Today has been a busy day, first off we put together a meal plan using the advice given, then visited our local abatior, a quick shop @ Aldi, then home to rip the kitchen out.

Spent £38 @ the abatior, for this we got:

    5lb of mince
    6 chicken fillets
2lb of diced chicken fillets for speedy prep when on shift :)
    Pork shoulder
    Brisket
    2 large rump steaks
    2lb of stewing steak.

This weeks meal plan will be:

    Monday:
    breakfast will be cereal.
dinner is sandwiches or beans on toast as working.
tea will be lasagne in the SC, (found recipe online).

    Tuesday:
    Breakfast is cereals.
    dinner sandwiches or mugshot.
tea will be lobby in the SC.

    Wednesday:
    Breakfast , cereals.
Dinner, sandwiches or jacket potato with beans.
Tea, chicken curry in the SC.

    Thursday:
    Breakfast, cereals.
    Dinner, sandwiches with mugshot.
Tea, steak, (chips from the local chippy), peas & gravy.

    Friday:
    Breakfast, cereals.
    Dinner, sandwiches or mugshot.
    Tea, mince hot pot SC.

    Saturday:
    Breakfast, Cereals.
Dinner, wrights pies while out and about.
    Tea, Tuna with steamed veg.

    Sunday:
    Breakfast, Cereals and toast.
Dinner, chicken dinner in the steamer.

Whilst I in Aldi we picked up a double hot plate for £20, which in my eyes is a bargain, as we can continue to use this once the kitchen is finish, when we go camping next year.

We have already used 2 of the chicken fillets to make a steamed Sunday dinner, which was amazing, now for cake and custard :D mmmmmm.

As you can see not all the meat has been used, any ideas for next week meal planner would be appreciated.

    Regards.
