Found! Old recipe book
The very last part of my kitchen has now been cleared out and, on a very high shelf, almost out of reach, was an old recipe book. 'Good Housekeeping: Cooking is Fun' dated (by me) 1965 and costing 9/6d. It's dog-eared and obviously well used by me in my younger days so I look forward to using some of the old recipes again.…

Does anyone make their own yogurt? Can you recommend maker?
Hi! In the 70s, mum used to make plain yogurt (it only took overnight) and remember the maker was supplied with six little individual tubs with lids. You just had to save a bit of the plain yog to use in the next batch. Does anyone know if you can still get this sort of thing or can anyone recommend an easy/cheap one to…

Ideas please for using up peppers and tomatoes?
Hiya Don't want to use in an omelette (my only idea so far!) but has anyone got any ideas for something 'warming'? I have heaps of red and green peppers and plain old tomatoes! Have garlic, onions etc and storecupboard stuff if that helps. BTW, I don't eat meat/fish. Thanks if there's any suggestions to follow! Mup.

Organic veg boxes - quantities?
I'm thinking about trying out the veggie boxes from Riverford or similar companies but can't find any information about how much of each veg is in each box. Could someone who buys these regularly please give me a rough idea? Thanks. I would want enough veg for two adults, we're not completely veggie but we eat a LOT of…

Uses for rubbish!
This morning, as I chucked the plastic bag and yellow sticky tape from the Tesco value bread in the bin, I wondered if they could be reused? I actually have taken my sandwiches to work in the used bread bag in the past. My Mum keeps one on the draining board for small kitchen rubbish, peeling etc, then takes it to the bin…

REALLY Stubborn limescale!
I have been using OS cleaning products and ideas for a few weeks now and am loving them, but I have a problem with extremely stubborn limescale under the rim of the toilet. Vinegar for 17p a bottle
Hi all, Sainsbury's economy range is selling 568ml of vinegar for 17p. It is described as 'spirit vinegar with ammonia caramel colouring' and does not contain malt, so I assume this is the same as distilled stuff. The brown colour means it's probably not suitable for washing whites, but it seems to work well for polishing…

Oil rather than butter/marge in baking ...
Hi all, I'd like to pick your brains please ... Hubby's on a no-sugar diet and has also been told to avoid butter/margarine. I'd really like to bake him something nice in the form of individual "puddings" I can put in the freezer for treats. He can eat eggs, wholemeal flour, olive oil and "natural" (i.e. not dried) fruit.…

Does anybody have a Rayburn...?
I've had one for a few years and I love it. It's gas powered and runs the central heating and water. As I work full time, I turn the the cooker element off all day until I get home after work, when I turn it up again for tea. I'm so glad I don't have an aga - although lovely, they are on full pelt, all the time, and at…

February Seasonal cookery
Hi everyone! One of the many ways of cutting back on food bill is to buy and cook foods when they're in season. Would it perhaps be viable to have a monthly thread for foods/recipes in season [I have a book which would give some idea of some items plus recipes] Maybe it would need to be linked to the recipe sticky in some…
