Does anybody have a Rayburn...?

I've had one for a few years and I love it.

It's gas powered and runs the central heating and water.

As I work full time, I turn the the cooker element off all day until I get home after work, when I turn it up again for tea. I'm so glad I don't have an aga - although lovely, they are on full pelt, all the time, and at least with my Rayburn, I can turn it up, down or off.

I've started to think about leaving it on the lowest heat all day and use it as s slow cooker, so that my evening meal is cooked when I get home.

Does anyone else have a Rayburn and have any tips for me, or interesting ideas for 'slow cooked' meals?

  • In a previous house I had a Rayburn and loved it. Have an Aga in this house and also love it!
Do you have "The Rayburn Cookbook"? I find it is very good for delicious family recipes and still use mine even though I don't have the Rayburn anymore. It suggests that you can slow cook dishes 6-7 hours at an idling temperature of 100-150C or 180-300F. There are various suggestions for casseroles and stews for all day cooking. HTH
  • i have a 50 yr old Rayburn which was converted from solid fuel to oil many years ago. It came with the house when i bought it, it's used for hot water and to sit beside in the winter, absolute bliss. I don't use the oven much for cooking as it tends to burn on one side (the side where the burner's located) and even at it's lowest setting it would be too hot to leave something cooking on the hotplate while i'm at work. I use the SC for that.

A woman is like a tea bag. You never know how strong she is until she gets into hot water.:D
