Vinegar for 17p a bottle

Hi all, Sainsbury's economy range is selling 568ml of vinegar for 17p. It is described as 'spirit vinegar with ammonia caramel colouring' and does not contain malt, so I assume this is the same as distilled stuff. The brown colour means it's probably not suitable for washing whites, but it seems to work well for polishing glass, windows, tiles, taps etc and of course for any other uses of vinegar where colour is not an issue.

i've never had a problem with malt vinegar staining any clothing but i can understand why people might be hesitant

i find the water in the machine is so dilute it makes no difference

lidl sells it's jars of vinegar for 17p as well... though i think that might be malt, can't remember

does anyone know where you can buy large quantities of vinegar cheaply? i used to buy 2 gallon jugs of it back in the states (clear stuff) for $1.99 those were the days :rotfl:

Best to look in markets ... my local one sells it in gallon containers sometimes. Also, if you know someone with a "cash and carry" store card, you can buy it in large quantities. My husband's sister has one for "Bookers" cash and carry and sometimes gets it for us.

Thanks for that Austin_Allegro - I had spotted the said bottles a few days ago when I was in getting my oats (so to speak). I bought a couple of bottles and done a few washes with the vinegar - absolutely no mishaps with regard to colour or staining at all, and no difference either in the effect on the clothes. I'll be buying more of it.

HOLsale - I've never seen 17p vinegar in Lidl - just the ordinary bottles of brown but at 35p. Does your branch do the 35p stuff too, or just the 17p version?

Thanks MATH. I started cycling to work a few weeks ago (to save money, natch) but because of that got hooked on a cycling website instead of this one!! Hope to pop by occasionally though...

You're making me feel guilty now. During the summer months I'm lucky enough to have 8 miles of uninterupted promenade, flat as a pancake and no traffic to worry about to cycle along. I keep saying I must get a bike but so far I'm all talk and no bicycle clips.:o

Before I started coming on this site I would always use malt vinegar instead of white vinegar as I didnt know you were supposed to use white vinegar. I thought any vinegar did the trick. Now I find myself searching high and low for white vinegar when I don't need to

In the list of ingredients of tesco value vinegar (malt) it lists a colouring as well, do you think that would make it more likely to stain things? I mostly use white because I think it is stonger   so I don't need as much as can dilute it down.

If anyone knows of anywhere in Kent that sells white vinegar cheaply please let me know - the towns I regularly visit are Canterbury, Ashford, Folkestone and Maidstone. I went on a booze cruise to France last autumn and found some cheaper there but only bought one bottle, fool that I am.

i don't suppose anyone on here knows where theres a proper english style market in edinburgh by any chance? i keep asking but so far no one can tell me about anything other than the saturday overpriced fancy smancy artisanal type market near the castle (lovely stuff, very expensive  )

i'd love to do a cash and carry but have no car! they are also very far away unfortunately but thanks for the tips i wouldn't have thought to look for vinegar at a market!
