Scraped my (old) car - cheap & cheerful repair options?
Just caught the bottom of my car on a kerb as a result of cutting a corner (because someone turned into the car park just as I was turning out). There's quite a deep scrape on the underside of the bodywork, below the passenger door. The car is fairly old and already somewhat disfigured as a result of some thoughtful soul…

Lost my oil filler cap
I noticed today that my filler cap is missing when I lifted the bonnet. The last time I saw it was just over a week ago when getting the air con checked over. I've ordered a replacement which will be a couple of days, should I block the hole up where the cap was with a clean rag or something or will be ok?

Summer vs winter diesel: different energy density?
This is probably a long shot, but let's see if anyone here happens to know this! I believe that summer diesel has a higher volumetric energy density (BTU/gallon, MJ/L or the like) than winter diesel, but when someone actaully asked me yesterday by how much I spent a fruitless hour searching online for any reliable data for…

Aygo / C1 / 107 loose gear knob
Hi, Recently the gear knob in my Aygo has become quite easy to rotate - not really a big deal but it is occasionally distracting. It's firmly attached to the gaiter which twists around with it, but isn't gripping the stick inside very much. I could feel something loose inside the gaiter which I pushed back up inside the…

Finding what a car is worth?
Does anyone know of a site that will tell me how much my car is worth. I've got a 2000(w) PT Cruiser 2.0 5d limited edition but can't find a valuation on line. I seem to remember looking at the parkers guide years ago but it doesn't look like it's free anymore. Thanks

Car insurance tips please.
My wife and I, retired 60s, want to insure our car with our daughter as a named driver. When I try the comparison sites I then have to ring to get an inflated quote to include DD. Any companies that will do this reasonably? DD lives 12 miles away, is 39, no points and shares a car with her husband. This is for the odd time…

GB sticker
We're going to mostly Belgium tomorrow for five days. Have ordered a GB sticker on Amazon, but it hasn't arrived yet in the post. I know it's compulsory to put them on, but how strict are the police if you 'forget' to attach one when travelling in Europe? What your experience? Thanks. :)

£50 Penalty for changing SAGA car insurance
Having received a renewal notice from SAGA insurance for my car I decided to try the comparison web sites to see if I could find a cheaper deal. I informed SAGA by phone that I could find one and was cancelling the current one with them. Much to my surprise I was told that a £50 charge (penalty?) was to applied to my…

MOT Failed Help
Hi All, I need some advice with a problem I have with Halfords. The story goes a bit like this: I booked my car in for MOT on Saturday the same day as the current MOT certificate expired. After booking the car in I got call from the garage telling me the MOT tester would only be working half the day on Saturday as he had a…

Used car (less than 1 yr old), suspected accident damage
Hi, I purchased a used car just over two weeks ago, although used the car is less then 1 year old (registered Sept-12). Car is very nice and runs more than fine. However, a few days ago I noticed the paint in a small area on the nearside isn't smooth - it's not immediately noticeable - you have to stand at a particular…

Cars which stay unsold for months
I have been scouring the net for cars for a few months now. There are certain cars that seem to never sell. The price of the cars doesn't seem that bad compared to others. Of course I have not inspected them myself, but do you think buyers are put off due to underlying problems. Would it be best to avoid cars that struggle…

CarMoT-Should I complain?
I bought a Volkswagen car last year. When I bought the car the ESC light was on. I was misinformed by the seller that the light would go off if I press the EPS light off button in the car. As it was a safety feature I never tried to switch off the light. What I didn't notice was that in the last year's MOT under advisory…

GAP Insurance
Mum is picking up her new car this week and I know one of the many things that they will try and sell her is GAP insurance. Now I've heard of too many people writing off their nice new car but I know that the cost of GAP from the garage is not cheap. Is there an company that MSErs would recommend?

A1 cats eyes not!
So last night I drove from London up the A1(M) and A1, Great clear road but it was very noticeable that on the well lit motorway bits the cats eyes were bright and all working. Then on the unlit A1 loads were not working especially on the bends, very dangerous! Edit, just looked to report it and you have to work out which…

I was talking to someone recently who said they had about 30 years ago a Rolls Canardly. Does anyone have any details or what it looked like?
