anyone able to advise on what potential issues the Volvo v50 might have, there's a few advertised (semi) locally but I'm not up to speed on the different specs...
the two are the 1.8 petrol and the 2.0D
anyone know what I should be looking for to avoid a money pit! hadn't really considered them much before, but decent size and decent looking - just want to know the pitfalls
cheers

The diesel is the ford engine. These can be a lot of trouble, the petrol is a better buy.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

Have you looked at the focus estate?
They come out of the same Ford factory and are cheaper.0 -
tbh I've not looked at the focus or mondeos as I just can't stomach them (no matter how good people tell me they are!)This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

What's wrong with them?
The focus and volvo look similar.0 -
I wouldn't say the ones I've seen look similar at all and the interior on the Volvo seems a lot betterThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

The Volvo IS a lot better.
I drove them extensively with work, and drove them hard too. We had the equivalent focuses also. The Volvo is a sector up.
The interior is a far nicer place to be, they feel more solidly built, and they're a better prospect on the motorway than a Focus. Be aware that the boot space on a V50 is not big though, on a par with a 3 series BMW touring.
I'd avoid the Diesel if out of warranty. They're good engines, really good, but they do have the common problems of dual mass flywheel and injector faults, plus a Diesel Particulate filter. We had to have the clutch rebuilt on one of ours after the DMF failed.
The petrol should be a good reliable workhorse. That said, there are far fewer petrol versions about and so that restricts your choice. If you can get a diesel at the right price with full service history and are covering big miles, it might work out the better bet for you.
I like V50's. I'd have one in a moment -except I'd want the T5 awd version!0 -

I had 2 S-Maxes, and was amazed at how good they were.
First ('07' plate) lasted 344,000 miles, and the 2nd I changed at 106,000 after a year. No backache, no neck problems and both the 2.0 and 2.2 TDCi are amazing!
These share the Mondeo platform, and I know at least 70% of the platform in my Jag estate and OH's Evoque, which was the main reason for getting the 2 cars we got!
