Lost my oil filler cap

I noticed today that my filler cap is missing when I lifted the bonnet. The last time I saw it was just over a week ago when getting the air con checked over.
I've ordered a replacement which will be a couple of days, should I block the hole up where the cap was with a clean rag or something or will be ok?

You don't want a rag being pulled into the engine.
Maybe stick some duct tape over the hole.0 -
Not the same I know but I lost my petrol cap (The inner one so it must have been my fault) which I discovered when I went to fill up with petrol. I was going to order a new one but thought I'd ask in the filling station in case it had been handed in. Surprisingly they had a big bag full of them, which they gave me to try. The first one fitted so problem solved.
So..... try asking at a filling station. You never know, they may have lots of oil filler caps too.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -
Anything you place over the filler will be subject to pressure changes and could get sucked into the engine.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Tape the top but leave breathable air holes, as stated the car will run under pressure, and there is a chance you'd have water intake or dirt into the engine bay as the weathers getting poor, so the oil can breath but no foreign objects can find there way in.0

I thought the valve cover was vented & not under pressure?Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0

where is it vented? I think some cars have oil breathers etc,
What I mean is if oil goes in there is can come out of there, I have just had a leak on my commuter car, with oil leaking out the top of the neck, never knew it'd find its way back up there but it does, i'm not sure if there's a vent on the caps, but some caps like the coolant which is under pressure, have vent capability I believe for when they exceed the pressure,
Anyway, just pop a breathable flanned/table cloth over it and tape it around the neck so it wont budge, but get a replacement cap asap.0
