Bathroom leak
Hello, About 6 weeks ago at the start of lockdown, within days typically we had a leak. It leaked all under our bath, it has come through underneath in the kitchen so the ceiling had a small leak and crack. Which we managed to drop but it’s left the crack and marked ceiling. The bath we took the panel off and left a tray…

Internal front door - cheaper option?
Hi there. I need a new "internal" front door. We have the main front door to the small porch in our terrace and then the original front door which must've been there before the porch was built. However, the glass is shattered in this internal front door so I need it replacing. Unfortunately, it's more narrow so requires a…

Drain Blocked by Plaster?
Hi all. I went today to check on the builders in our recently purchased home only to notice that they had drained the plaster buckets in the outside gutter drain. I went this evening to empty the drain and noticed that there is a hole but no drain for the water to go in. I am worried that they have concreted over the drain…

Compacting down type 1 MOT base
I'm planning on laying a small paved base to use as storage for wheelie bins, wheelbarrow etc. I’m going to dig out and lay a type 1 MOT base of 60/75mm and then sand before laying the slabs. What can I use to compact/whack down the type 1 if I don’t have a whacker plate?

Darned Woodchip
Is it ever acceptable to paper over woodchip?? Maybe a lining paper then wallpaper? Has anyone successfully done this. Nearly every room in our house has previously been decorated in the stuff, we have over the years removed most of it, just 2 more rooms to do but age is wearying me! I believe the walls are sound, they…

Steam coming out of washing machine
This is a new machine, only 3 weeks old. I’m running a 90 degree wash and there is steam coming out of the drawer. It’s almost continuous. Is this normal? I know it’s a hot wash but I didn’t think it would be boiling. There is condensation dripping from the underside of the drawer.

My extension & my neighbour
Comrades, my next-door neighbour happened to mention that, maybe next year, he intends installing decking over his wee back yard and possible over his single-storey extension. He said he intends to connect his joists to my extension (23) on one side and to his extension (25) on the other side of his yard - see image (joist…

Combi boiler choice
I am in a flap because my combi boiler has just decided to leak water all over the place. On a quick google it seems it could be a relatively minor and easy fix, or so major it is worth considering replacing the (I think fairly cheap, 15 year old) boiler. Obviously I am hoping for the former, especially during lockdown,…

Double glazing
Hi I am looking for some advice. I am about to have a new double glazed sliding door installed (Maxlight) and have the option of a side or bottom (or possibly both) lock. The side lock will mean a bulkier frame so sight lines will be thicker which is something I wanted to avoid. However it is PAS24 compliant. The bottom…

Improving worktops
A friend of mine doesn't like her fitted kitchen. She's thought of painting the units a different colour but is worried she'll then be annoyed by the worktops which are standard chipboard with a rounded edge and wood-effect surface. Without changing all the worktops what other ways are there to improve them at reasonable…
