Compacting down type 1 MOT base

I'm planning on laying a small paved base to use as storage for wheelie bins, wheelbarrow etc. I’m going to dig out and lay a type 1 MOT base of 60/75mm and then sand before laying the slabs. What can I use to compact/whack down the type 1 if I don’t have a whacker plate?

You can make one yourself using timber (Hand compactor)Projects 2020-

Tread it down with your heel. Jump up & down on it, and spray a bit of water over the area. When you come to lay the slabs, mix some cement in with the sand (1 part cement, eight to ten parts sand).

I tried a hand compactor on type 1 and it did nothing useful. Ended up hiring a plate compactor from HSS which did exactly what I needed, albeit very noisily.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230
