British Gas Homecare Agreements
I've been a BG Homecare customer for over 40 years. Moved to current property 14 years ago and a new boiler was installed about 4 years ago. Every year the price of the renewal has jumped up and this year was so significant I looked around at alternatives. Was pretty tempted & impressed by price and reviews of Hometree.…

Halogen oven for cooking frozen fish & chips?
Can anyone tell me how well a halogen oven would deal with cooking frozen fish & chips? Currently we preheat a fan-assisted oven to 200 degrees and cook both for 20 minutes. Would a halogen oven be any quicker, and how long would it take to pre-heat to 200 degrees?

Dehumidifier for a 2 bed flat and allergies
Hi all, The flat I'm moving in to is single glazed and has a bit of a musky smell from being unoccupied. I'm going to buy a dehumidifier as a result. I also suffer from mild allergies of uncertain origin but I'm aware dehumidified and treated air can help. Can anyone recommend a model that will do the job but also has…

Can anyone recommend a floor standing boiler?
I'm looking to replace my current boiler which is a floor standing Ideal Mexico model standard boiler with a tank in the loft which is around 18 years old. The boiler is in a small utility room with not much wall space, so it might be easier to get another floor standing model. I'm not sure if there are many floor standing…

Tilt and turn window - mechanism broken
I have a tilt and turn style window that recently stopped being able to put in the tilt position. I had a window repair man come to look at it and he said that a part in the mechanism is broken and needs to be replaced. He also said that since this style of window is imported from Germany, it won't be easy to find a spare…

Concrete floor - damp proof membrane installation
I am buying a property and a survey has shown that the solid ground floor (likely concrete slab) is damp in some parts and is also uneven. Recommendation is that the floor is re-laid with a damp proof membrane (as a DPM would not originally have been installed). The affected rooms are a small kitchen and lounge. Have been…

Mattress for a heavy person.
Had a look on the internet for a mattress for a person who weighs the wrong side of 25 stones. He used to have a good quality mattress for over 16 years. After hearing about how one should change after X number of years he bought one from Argos. A well known brand. After 3 years his area is worn out, especially where he…

Sagging ceiling
Hi, I've recently moved to a house that requires a bit of work. I am now tackling one of the bedrooms. The ceiling is sagging in one corner of the room (see pic below). Any tips on where to start with this? I'm a novice DIYer so any advice is appreciated. https://ibb.co/VpmJGQW

Kitchen extractor flue pipe placement?
We live in a semi-detached house and are redoing the home from the inside. We are also doing a rear extension on the property, in the same length as our neighbour's extension, in which we will be putting our living room. We are drawing up a party wall agreement with surveyors, however, our neighbour has had a problem with…

What finish for an oak kitchen worktop?
Hi all, I'm buying an unfinished roak worktop for a new kitchen and would like some advice about finishes I should apply, having read lots of contradictory information online. It's going in a fitted kitchen with navy units, with a matching upstand, and a porcelain sink unit and induction hob that will both sit on top of…

Honeywell CM927/BDR91 connection lost
I have Honeywell CM927/BDR91 pair to control my boiler. It has been working well for a couple of years. But recently I found that CM927 sometimes fails to turn on/off the boiler. When I checks the BDR91 (in airing cupboard with hot water tank) when this happens, it is showing a steady red light. This, based on manual,…

Help with clicking noise in loft during heating/cooling
Hi, Early last winter we had a leak in an upstairs radiator, which a plumber advised had been caused by corrosion. He spent a day flushing our entire system and adding some anti-corrosion treatment which he said would help prevent the same happening to other radiators. As part of that work, he was up in the loft as there's…

Wooden flooring and underlay choice
I need to replace some laminate flooring in a living room and considering wooden flooring - possibly engineered oak wood of the type with the beveled edges. The old flooring has a dense foam (polystyrene like) underlay. I understand there is a new type of underlay in the form of a dense (rubbery?) mat that is only a few mm…

Deactivate Optima Plus alarm....
Hello, We moved into our house 2 years ago. It has an old active alarm system which we have never used (lights on main box alight as well as those on the room sensors). We are renovating the house and will be needing to cut wires and remove the system. Obviously just removing is not an option as they have tamper alarms,…

I've seen thick carpet fairly cheap, less than £100 for the whole room. Is this something I could get my hubby to fit or is it always better to get a professional fitter in? I cant find a…

Fly tipping help please
Not sure if this is the correct board but here goes. My MiL lives in a terraced house with back entry ( here up north, we call it “ the backs”). People park their cars here as there are yellow lines at the front. A number of houses on the terrace are privately owned and rented out. Most residents are good neighbours.…

Converting 3 wire thermostat to Hive SLT5 2 wire thermostat
I have a few Heatmiser DS1 V2 thermostats wired up in 230V Switching Mode, meaning that I have wires for Live, Neutral and Switched Live (they call it Live Return). I'd like to replace these with some Hive SLT5 wired thermostats, but these only require a Live & Neutral, with no preference on which wire is connected to…

Conservatory Confusion?! What is allowed.
Hi, I've got such conflicting answers about my conservatory status and what I can, and can not do. We bought the property 18 months ago, with a conservatory which has a dining room at one side, and a kitchen extension at the other, the three rooms forming an L with the conservatory in the middle. This has central heating…
