Sagging ceiling

Hi,

I've recently moved to a house that requires a bit of work. I am now tackling one of the bedrooms. The ceiling is sagging in one corner of the room (see pic below). Any tips on where to start with this? I'm a novice DIYer so any advice is appreciated.

Is it a lath and plaster ceiling?

If you can get into the attic and photograph from above it might help.

The walls don't look particularly straight, so how old is the house?

With older property, it's sometimes unnecessary to alter imperfections like this if they are safe and not still moving. Someone has used woodchip paper to go over this crack and slight sag and it's not split yet. The key to how stable it is, would be knowing when it was papered; not the exact date, but you might assess that it was years rather than just a few months ago.

Looking in the loft will help you work out if the sag is safe. If it is, I'd leave it. With old property things like this are part of the character. Surely, if you wanted perfect walls and ceilings, you'd have bought something more modern?
