Help with clicking noise in loft during heating/cooling

Hi,
Early last winter we had a leak in an upstairs radiator, which a plumber advised had been caused by corrosion. He spent a day flushing our entire system and adding some anti-corrosion treatment which he said would help prevent the same happening to other radiators. As part of that work, he was up in the loft as there's a water tank up there.
Ever since then, there's been an irritating clicking noise coming from the loft whenever we switch the heating or hot water on, and it continues for an hour or two after the heating is switched off - so I assume it's happening while the pipes heat up and cool down.
However, it seems much worse this winter. Some nights it continues well into the early hours, and is definitely having a big impact on my sleeping pattern. It's a pain having to remember to switch off the heating at least 2-3 hours before going to bed.
Any idea what could be causing it, and how to fix it? Is it likely to be the pipes themselves, or the wooden joists in the loft? The reason I ask is that the plumber was a very big guy (rugby player who was into his bodybuilding!) so I wonder whether his weight was too much for the joists (our loft isn't floored, so he was just balancing on the beams).
Thanks in advance for any help!

Expansion of piping making the noise.
The pipes are often clamped with plastic clips/ clamp fittings , the clicking is probably coming from those , or where it passes through the joistEx forum ambassador
