Worcester Bosch boiler through Help-Link
Hi, I had a Worcester Bosch boiler fitted last October by a company called Help Link. I recently had my boiler serviced by a local gas engineer who asked why I didn't have a MagnaClean or water softener fitted (I live in Hartlepool which is notorious for its hard limey water). I'd never even heard of a magnaclean. He asked…

Do I need an Architect?
Hi Everyone, I am looking to hopefully to do some remodelling of the downstairs in our terraced house. Ideally we would like to expand our kitchen so there is room for a kitchen table in there. Currently it is a long galley kitchen. The front of our property is composed of the kitchen, adjacent to a hallway with stairs up,…

Replacing boiler time control
Just bought a house and the boiler has an old British Gas EMT2 and WR1 Wireless system for controls. Could anyone (preferably heating engineers of plumbers) recommend a good replacement for this system (digital timer, thermostat etc.). I'm confident I could fit them myself, but could do with some pointers on the best and…

Anyone come across a flexible wood bit?
I'm installing a new, sunken, two gang mains socket in a brick and plaster wall. I've cut the hole and made a track down behind the skirting board only to find that the floorboard underneath is right up against the wall. I'll probably bash my way through it somehow but I wondered if there was such a thing as a flexible…

Radiator Leak - How best to fix it?
I found a small hole in the bottom of one of the radiator panels and I was wondering how best to fix it. There is a bit of rust forming around the hole as well. I've looked around a bit on some advice sites and they suggest to replace the radiator. This seems like an expensive option for one little hole. I found this…

Condensation help.
Hello, So I recently moved into a new build flat which has patio doors leading to a balcony. I have noticed condensation on the door handles on the Inside. At first I thought it might be where the doors were left open but it's happening even without opening the doors for days. It seems to only be around the keyhole? All…

Dimmable Lights - thought I understood!
Went to local shop to buy some light fittings today and when I looked the ones we liked said "non-dimmable" for the fitting. I don't understand this at all. Surely the factor that determines if a light is dimmable is the bulbs? It takes 5 G9 bulbs - the ones we have say dimmable on them. I went into that shop thinking all…

How do you fix a window frame rattling in the wall?
Especially in strong winds, the whole frame creaks back and forth in the wall and I am concerned that someday it'll shatter. I plugged the gaps between the frame and wall both inside and out with sealant but it's still moving, any ideas what I should try next?

Tongue & grove bath panel, diy beginners help.
Hi, Having a nightmare finding a bath panel to fit the metal bath in our new home, non seem long enough or deep enough, I've even considered getting a gloss sliding door and cutting to fit! Although that might be beyond my ability. In the end I'm thinking I'll have a go with tongue and grove as it seems cheap and as the…

Underfloor heating and drain
Hi, Thinking of having underfloor heating installed. However, the drain runs under part of the house that the underfloor heating will be over. This is conjuring up very expensive nightmares if the drain was ever to need repair work that needed the floor digging up (on top of new floor). Is this the case or can underfloor…

Wood Burning Stoves
Hi I have a couple of questions about wood burning stoves. We have an open fire at the moment and burn wooden logs. Although the chimney sweep says coal is more efficient in terms of heat per money spent. Looking at a log burner then, what makes these so much more efficient? I guess it limits the amount of heat that goes…

Soundproof/Insulate fireplace/chimney.
Hi, I live in a solid wall 1929 semi, with a nasty neighbour. I had acoustic boards fitted to the alcove walls either side of shared chimney, as due to the one brick thick party wall the chap didn't want to risk drilling. This hasn't really had much effect (neighbour stands next to wall shouting comments), it does seem as…

Waste pipe venting into attic
We live in the top floor of a block of flats, and have a common waste pipe that feeds all 4 flats in our side of the block. The waste pipe runs up into the loft, where it's not capped, basically meaning they all vent into the loft space. Is that allowed/ok?

Chimney Sweep with bird cowls
We have bird cowls on our chimney pots (after we had a pidgeon down the chimney a few years ago) - it survived but made a mess of our newly decorated living room - when released from behind the gas fire. The cowls are not clamped on - just sit using gravity and sprung arms.. How will a chimney sweep ensure that they remain…
