I used a heat gun to remove gloss from some doors, going to be doing same to some skirting soon. The heat gun was only £12 from Screwfix, plus a couple of quid for a scraper.

Won't be as messy as sanding the paint, although you will need to give them a light sanding before re-glossing.
  • Thanks! The idea of the gun sounds fab! We'd been looking at chemical solutions and weren't too keen!

Best and easiest way is, get a pry bar, pry off the skirting, bin and replace. Skirting is cheaper to replace than the man hours you will spend removing the paint.

I have to disagree with you there, skirting may well be cheap, but that depends what type you get. And, unless you're comfortable cutting mitre joints etc, don't forget the cost of the joiner to fit it.

It'll take a few hours to take the paint off with the heat gun, you can first coat them whilst they are off, stick them back on, and second coat them, job done.

I second replacing the skirting, unless you are extremely time rich/cash poor and are prepared to spend a fortune on electricity for a heat gun you will drive yourself nuts.
You'll need a mitre jig or saw for outside corners and a coping saw or some such for the internal corner cutout.

Replace perfectly good skirting?! Really... what are you smoking? Whilst it looks easy, getting it right isnt! I would only really remove the skirting if its damaged beyind recovery with filler, you want to replace it for a differentt style or you are fitting some sort of laminate/wood floor...! I am a general DIY'er and I am currenrly dealing with the skirting in my hall way after removing to fit laminate.... hatefull job!

OP: Why do you want to remove the paint? If its to repaint, just give them a really good sanding down and repaint!
