Papering a ceiling
Every website I have looked at says to run the paper from a wall edge (using a plumb line!)- but I know from previous wallpaperings the walls are not square (old house). The removed woodchip paper ran from wall to middle of chimney breast. How do I make sure the first strip is in straight and where do I put it?. Do I go…

one ring on gas hob squealing
We had a new gas hob (Millar) fitted a year and 1/2 ago and today the largest of the 4 rings is squealing really high pitched, yet quiet when its on. The other 3 rings/burners are OK. Is it still OK to use the 4th, squealing burner please? Its really quiet, you do have to listen hard to even hear it

Fuse ratings and ovens - replacing double with two singles
I have a double oven in place at the moment (7.2 Kw per the rating plate). Planning to replace it with two single ovens, each rated 3.6 Kw. There's a 32 amp fuse, and logic suggests that there won't be any problems replacing the double oven with two singles. Am I right?

New bathroom - should I not use before painting walls?
We have had a completely new en-suite installed - walls re-plastered and new shower/toilet/sink installed Should we use the shower etc before we paint the freshly plastered walls? My wife is concerned that the moisture/condensation will soak into the plaster if it is not covered by a bathroom paint. Is she correct? (I'm…

Gloss on carpet
My mum tripped over an open tin of gloss and got it all over her carpet. She cleared it up the best she could and scrubbed with some white spirit but its still there. Does anyone have any experience of improving this accident. She is very house proud but doesn't have a lot of money to replace her carpet! I've contacted…

New radiators leaking...
My Dad replaced two of my radiators, but couldn't get them to stop leaking (both sides of each radiator). I called out a plumber and he tightened both sides up and said to leave it a week and see if they still leaked... they did (he talked about my Dad over tightening the bit that goes into the radiator, you should see…

Cracks around window
I'm thinking of buying a property and some of the windows have cracks around them. See photo: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3454522/window.jpg (copy and paste link in browser - forum won't let me post pic because I'm a newbie!) Does this look worrying? Or easily remedied?

New radiator suddenly cold
I replaced a radiator about a week ago and it was working fine, fitted by a plumber also as he stuck on a TRV etc. I went into the room last night and the radiator was ice cold, all others in the house were hot. The flow pipes were both cold also, and the radiator didn't need bled, I tried that. Any ideas?

Does anyone have the hive or wave app?
I know it's not particularly mse at about £200 to install but if anyone has an app which controls their heating boiler I would like to know the pro,s and con 's. I know they rely on the Internet but don't know how this connection happens- does the installation include a dongle or something's? And what happens if the…

insulation for a attic room
Hi there, we live in a 1900 miners terraced house with the attic as a room. This is not a conversion, as all the houses on the block are the same. How can we insulate up there? There are 2 velux windows on either side of the roof, no access to the eaves and no loft space. We had the tiles replaced about 8 years ago, but…

Dulux Bathroom paint or Dulux Trade Diamond Matt for bathroom?
Hi all, I normally use Dulux Trade paint on all my "regular" walls/rooms, and it goes the furthest and gives the best finish. Dulux Trade don't have a specific bathroom paint, the have their "Diamond Matt" range which can be used for bathrooms. Can anyone advise if this would be the better option to paint my bathroom, or…

Checkatrade - checks on contractors?
Had conflicting information from Checkatrade. In dispute with one of their traders who is registered on their site and has therefore been verified. Said trader sent, without any warning, someone else to do the job. Checkatrade said, first time, that, yes, any contractor would have to go through the same checks but second…

Single brick (small) extension
Have this extension on the back of the house: Just wondering if, since we are going into winter, it's worth insulating the side walls and if so how? (This is how it was before we moved in). It'd say it's about 2ft ?

Do we really need to remove tiles to replace bath?
Hi, Long story short, we have to fit a new bath because old one had cracked. Bath end runs into tiled studded wall of walk in shower at one end, and tight against the wall at the other end. Bathroom is tiled from floor to ceiling totally with no spare tiles, been like that when I arrived. Ok the plumber says he would have…

Urgent - removing glued on carpet!!

Poorly fitted and tiled ensuite shower
I paid bathroom fitter to completely install a shower, tilting, enclosure and everything else. After 6 months the shower is leaking around the tray, and the grouting has cracked everywhere inside the shower. This is causing water damage in the ensuite and downstairs. How should I approach getting this work corrected either…

Buying a tassimo
Missus wants one. I've had a look. There are eight models on the website. Other than style, the only differences appear to be size of unit and amount of water each one can hold (with one requiring a brita filter). How the fudge do I decide which tassimo to buy? The tassimo website doesn't make it very clear.

boiler blowing fuse on main fuse board
I had my heating system power flushed a week ago and it ran fine for the first week. Now after about 10 seconds it trips the fuse on the main board. It does not happen if the pump is disconnected but the pump seems to turn manually. Should I change the pump or could it be something else?
