Does anyone have the hive or wave app?

I know it's not particularly mse at about £200 to install but if anyone has an app which controls their heating boiler I would like to know the pro,s and con 's. I know they rely on the Internet but don't know how this connection happens- does the installation include a dongle or something's? And what happens if the Internet goes down . Can it be manually over riden?
If you have one I would like to know your feelings. As I have a relatively new Worcester bosch it would make sense to have the wave which is for these boilers but they all do roughly the same I would think

I have the Hive system from British Gas, had it a few years now think it was £149 fitted. Overall we like it a lot, you still get a remote thermostat so if internet goes down you can control as normal. Bonus ofc is the app based control, see whats going on from anywhere in the world ! from any pc or phone just log in and turn the heating on off, up or down. Wouldn't be without it now.0

We have a Hive 2. I bought it from Amazon and fitted it myself. It took about 15 minutes.
So far there have only been pro's and no cons.
They come in three parts: a remote thermostat/programmer, a heating controller that replaces your existing programmer, and a hub that needs to be connected to your router with a cable. If the internet goes down, it will still work but you cant use the app to control it, just the wall mounted thermostat0 -

If internet goes down you can still use the manual thermostat/controller. What happens though if you turn off your router (and people do); let's look at someone who goes on holiday for a couple or three weeks. Would the router be left on? I switch mine off for a week-end away but I don't have Hive/Nest!
I leave my router on when I'm away so I can monitor what's happening with the heating and make sure the house (and water) are hot when I get back. My smoke alarms also have an app.
I avoid switching the router off for long periods - I find that my internet connectivity is better if I don't. And as for when we have powercuts... it can take up to a week to settle back down again (I can understand unplanned ones, but for planned ones you'd think SSE would bother to tell BT so they could put in a backup power supply)0 -
I leave my router on all the time. We do get more than our fair share of power cuts though, probably averages one a week, but the Hive system still works with the router disconnected/turned off. The hub is exactly that, it communicates with the thermostat(s) and controller independently of the local network.
That can create it's own issues when the three components are far apart or separated by thick walls.0 -
We have the tado smart thermostat and it's brilliant. You configure your schedule pretty much the same as any programmable thermostat using the app and it does the rest. It 'learns' how long your house takes to heat up so knows when to start the heating for you. It picks up when the last person leaves home using geo location on your mobile phone and automatically turns the heating off, but will also detect when you're on your way back and get it warmed up in time for you returning. It's also recently introduced support for apple homekit and they constantly develop it and add new features. It does have a manual override but I've never had the need to use it.
You can integrate smart TRV's with it to give you multi zone control too.
By the way, I don't work for tado - I'm just a happy customer!!0 -
Another vote for Hive. I paid £149 and it more than paid for itself within the first year. With the addition of new features since I got it like holiday mode, it's great.0

Hive also has that facility but it requires mobile data to be turned on.0 -
I also vote for Hive which I've found pretty good abndn reliableWould the router be left on? I switch mine off for a week-end away but I don't have Hive/Nest!
I think its odd to turn your router off whether you have Hive or any other device or indeed no device at all. Routers if switched off tend to want to resync when switched back on and can give you a lower speed whilst they do so.0 -

Even 5% a year would only save me £12.63 a year so more than 10 years to pay for itself.
changed cost because I had not removed hot water and cooking costsover 73 but not over the hill.0
