New Boiler / Back Boiler
We are about to move into a home with a back boiler. Its not been serviced for at least 20 years, so we planned to remove and replace it with a combi. However the more I research, the more I hear about how reliable back boilers are. I am now thinking of leaving it where it is. Our big, big concern is safety; can these…

Airing cupboard warm despite heating/hot water set to OFF
Hi all As the title suggests, our airing containing the water tank is very warm even though we have heating and hot water set to off. Does anyone know why this might be? I thought with heating/water set to off, nothing would be heating up at all. We have a gas boiler in the kitchen, and the shower is electric. But we still…

wallpapering a ceiling
I'm planning to remove old lining paper in a bedroom and re paper, a job I've done quite a few times before. This room also has a papered ceiling that's coming away at the joins. I'll also leave a hole in it when I remove a disused light switch ( the ceiling paper has a slight embossed pattern and it's old, so finding the…

Conservatory costs
Hello all, In the middle of buying a property, and had a building survey done this past week. It turns out that there is dry rot in the timber framed conservatory. We were aware the roof needed replacing but not of the rot in the frame. So it looks like the £2k cost originally budgeted for is out the window. I have a…

Driveway Problems council/housing association... please help!!!
Hi all, We moved into a newly built area in 2007 and mortgaged in 2011 and our house is at the junction of the 2 roads. We don't technically have any parking space located in front of our house so we just use to park it on junction and wherever we could park it. Problems started arising when they opened up a surgery near…

Dry rot & spot & dab
We bought our first ever house in March. Not getting a full in depth survey done was probably the biggest mistake we have ever made (& costly). The previous owner blocked off all the air bricks, creating the right conditions for the rot to grow. I've got a specialist company (peter Cox) to come in and do the treatment, but…

Floor varnish or floor oil?
We have a huge wooden floor that we're about to sand, about 120m2. But can't decide what to do next, oil it or sand it? Seems like oil only needs 1 coat so would be faster but it's more expensive (calculations seem to be about the same cost actually, factoring in 2 coats of varnish). Can anyone help?

Angled or straight radiator valves better?
I'm replacing a bathroom radiator with a towel rail type radiator. Is it better to use angled radiator valves and have the pipes come through the wall or straight and have them come through the floor? At the moment they are capped off under the floor, so angled would be a little more work but was thinking through the wall…

Single spalled brick
Bear with me on this folks - be prepared for some possibly stupid questions - though I've always believed that such questions are the best way to learn. Please note that there are several related questions. A brick at the bottom of my house - second one up from the ground - has "spalled" - I believe this is the correct…

Rubbish dumped in garden - why should I pay?!
Hello, bit of an odd one this, looking for some advice. Someone has dumped some bulky items in the front garden I share with three other flats - it's a large wooden palette and a smashed up wooden table. I don't have a car otherwise I'd just take them to the tip, and my council only has a service for collecting household…

Cost of bathroom extension
Consider a kitchen which protrudes out from the main structure of a terraced house. If the 1st floor bathroom was extended so that it was built out and covered exactly the footprint of the ground floor kitchen, approximately in what sort of price range would this cost if the bathroom was extended out by ~5 sq m? It would…
