Replacement guttering and facias

Hi
We live in a Victorian cottages with an extension which is approx 10 years old to the side, when we moved in the survey picked up that the guttering and facias would need replacing we are now looking at getting this work done.
I have had 3 companies come round to quote so far all local independent builders I have found on rated people or in local paper and have been told conflicting advise as to what need s to be done.
One guy says the existing wooden facias are sound just need sanding painting and then cladding with PVC facias that are 9mm, he said removing the sound wooden facias and replacing with PVC will damage the roof line as there is an asbestos roof cover beneath the tiles.
Neither or the other two builders have mentioned this and both advised replacing facias with PVC with no mention of such a problem. In fact the second builder who came round mentioned the roof cover and said that it had been done well and was supporting the roof.
I have looked at some DIY forums and there seems to be differing opinions as to wether cladding facias is a good idea or not.
I was wondering if anyone had some advice as I now feel that I have such different opinions for the same job? My instinct is to have all replaced with PVC as the damaged was raised by our survey but am now worried that when the existing facias are removed the roof will fall down as implied but the builder.
I have seen references for all of the builders that are good so am a bit stuck as to what to do?
Sorry to waffle on but don't know any builders I can ask.
Many. Thanks

I'm near replacing my guttering and the facias are wooden.
I've been looking at prices and process, (with a view to DIY) , I did find a link although for a company shows what is required.
Often it is not a good idea to put fascia over wood (if the wood is rotten) , the actual parts for mine (traditional semi) would come to under £100, I'm not sure on scaffolding hire.0 -
Thanks DUTR,
I'm not sure if the wood is rotten or not the paint work is flaking. The builder only looked from the ground he didn't actually get up a ladder and take a look?
Scaffolding is something else none of them match on one said we needed it due to the working at height rules which made sense, and one said he would do it off a ladder which is fine as I'm employing him as a private contractor not sure who is correct?0 -

I suppose some will have experience to know, depending on your windows, you can have a look from a bedroom (obviously that will only reveal a section).
Here is the link , as for the scaffolding, I hear it is regulations now, although you say you are employing them, then that would make you responsible for the full risk assement and safety of the employees.0 -
Round our way they are happy to still work off ladder to paint and replace that's upto the top of the roof pitch.
if the wood is good just get them painted good job will last, just had ours done after 20y will see what they look like in another 5-10.
what's wrong with the gutters?0 -
How many metres and what sort of quotes.
for. The cost of material it looks like most of the suppliers also do skirting so plastic skirting in google finds them.
you can then lol at quality and specs and price(retail)0 -

Mine are cast and one end cap is broken and an angle piece has corroded and now leaking.
Just under 24M length, 4*135 angle 2*90 2 downpipes, clips and other little bits.0 -
All thes companies are rip offs! The materials are so cheap.
we did ours for under £180. Took off old wood, used scaffold and one helper on a ladder.
OP try a joiner to get more quotes.0 -
Thanks everyone
One quote we received was for £4500 for new facias, gutters and sofits.
The second quote was £2000 for the same but without scaffolding.
I am waiting to receive the quote for the cladding.
These are for 40m of facias and 20m of guttering - I think the guttering is fine but all three said I may as well get it done at same time as facias as the cost is minimal.0 -
I would get some more quotes it may take Three or four days I think, and even at 150 per day top it is not going to be 2000 with the materials. I would say a few hundred plus scaffold.0

We have just been quoted £300/house for both side of a row of 3 terraced houses to replace the guttering and PVC facia from a company that is basically a one man band.
We had previously been quoted from a bigger company of twice that price, a quote that I was actually happy with as it carried a guarantee with it but I had to arrive at an agreement with my neighbours and they had baulked at the higher price.0
