wallpapering a ceiling

I'm planning to remove old lining paper in a bedroom and re paper, a job I've done quite a few times before. This room also has a papered ceiling that's coming away at the joins. I'll also leave a hole in it when I remove a disused light switch ( the ceiling paper has a slight embossed pattern and it's old, so finding the same paper to patch it up is unlikely).

So, what advice can people give about lining a ceiling. Easy, difficult? It's always seemed like a difficult job to me but I've never tried it.

Thanks.

    Just done ours :)

I found it best to paste the ceiling well for starters, then paste the paper and then apply to the ceiling.

A piece of cake if you get some help and a suitable working height .
Two BD workmates set on lowest level, scaffolding plank and a couple of chairs.
Helper stands behind you , holding paper above your head........yes I know this sounds like a real amateurish set up......but it works fine for me.

Thanks both. Good ideas there. Makes me think about constructing a platform. I have access to pallets and I have a few scaffold planks. So a bit of time spent there should be worthwhile.

Not sure about help though. Reminds me of many years ago when the missus and I were wallpapering a room. You've never heard such language:)

I think essential for us amateur's.Try and think of a long platform ,you need to get the majority of the strip up in one go. But between strips, you can rest your arms and then just move the platform ready for the next.

    ps youtube is great.
  • Paste the strip, and fold it into a concertina with the folds about 14" or so apart, leaving an end to start from protruding. When you're ready, get a stick about the same length as the roll width in your left hand and drape the concertina over it. Hold the papering brush in your right hand and use it to place the start of the strip, making sure that the scrap to be trimmed off is well stuck to the coving/wall or it will peel off whilst you're working. Now just work your way across the room, unfolding the concertina as you go. Trim the ends as usual, but be careful they don't peel off while your back is turned! No need for anything to stand on, I can reach from the floor.

    Simples.

    No need for a platform.

Paste ceiling and paper. Stand on a ladder stick the start of the paper onto the ceiling, then using a sweeping brush with the head wrapped in a cut off of wallpaper, place the glued paper over the head of the brush, walk along and 'sweep' the paper onto the ceiling.
