Airing cupboard warm despite heating/hot water set to OFF

Hi all

As the title suggests, our airing containing the water tank is very warm even though we have heating and hot water set to off.

Does anyone know why this might be? I thought with heating/water set to off, nothing would be heating up at all.

We have a gas boiler in the kitchen, and the shower is electric. But we still get hot water through the taps.

Any advice would be appreciated, our gas bill is brutal even though its summer!

THanks

If the tank is hot then something is heating it.

do you hear the boiler firing up.

they may not be related(hot water and gas usage) they may have a gas hob and or oven.

do they monitor the meter or just assume the DD means the gas is high.

The starting point is to find out what is making the water hot.

in most systems that's an immersion or the boiler.

    if neither of those then.....

    what's your diagnosis?

your response implies you are convinced it is gas that makes the water hot

It was suggested by the OP that this may be causing the high GAS BILL

So it couldn't possible be the electric emmersion that's somehow heating the water that's warming the airing cupboard then?

Gas powered hot water tanks are unusual in the UK, more common in the USA and Canada

So did you actually offer any helpful advice or just nit picking????
  • Sounds a bit odd this.

Seems there are two questions here really. First, if the water is hot, SOMETHING must be heating it. The most common setup in most houses is a boiler for normal use, with an immersion as backup / booster. In this case my first guess would be the immersion is being left on - this would be using a lot of electricity.

This, of course, doesn't explain the high gas bill. Is the timer / programmer faulty ? Could it be firing up the boiler even though it's set to "off". In this case, you will be able to hear the boiler firing up.

Failing that, I'm not sure what else to suggest. Bridgedino mention a gas-powered hot water cylinder. Never heard of this - is that effectively a separate gas-powered version of an immersion, i.e. separate from the boiler ? It's a possibility I suppose, though I've never come across this before.

The other possibility, as GetMore4Less alluded to, is that it's the electric immersion that's keeping the water hot, and the gas bill isn't actually that high, it's just that the DD is high. This one is easy enough to sort out. Contact your gas supplier ( or look at your last bill ). If you're massively in credit then that's probably your answer.

It is highly likely to have an immersion heater element fitted in addition to the gas heating coil. His electric bill is probably "brutal" too.

It's simple enough to check if the boiler is kicking in, you will hear it.

Sorry EBS, posted before I read yours.
I was replying to what I read earlier, that was very dismissive of the IH idea, unfairly so, the poster had read the question
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • Hi everyone, thanks so much for your replies, this is all very helpful.

The thing that immediately jumps out is IMMERSION heater! Cant believe i didn't think of that...

I will inspect our last bill to see the breakdown between gas and electric, my girlfriend was the one who said a high proportion of the DD was due to gas consumption.

I will check this out as soon as i get back tonight. If it is the immersion, we have had it switched on since we moved in 9 months ago!

no wonder our bill is high

I ll report back, thanks again everyone.

If you have a gas boiler, why are you even using the immersion heater? It costs about 300% more than using gas to heat your hot water.
