Cost of removing load bearing wall??

Washing Machine....Grrrr!
Hi Got a problem with my (old) washer, Indesit W133. It crashed on a cycle (number 8), and wont reset. It has done it before, but I normally just turn it off and back on again. If I turn the dial round to the "end programme" point, it flashes and seems to reset. I can then start it on number 8 again, but stops again after…

Outside Tap - How much?
We're in the process of buying a property (final stages now, woop woop!). One of the things that I would like to do (though granted it's not the highest on my list) is to fit an outside tap. The kitchen is at the back of the property, the sink, dishwasher, etc are plumbed in along the back wall. So from a plumbing point of…

Best burglar deterrent?
I've just heard that two people were burgled who only live a few miles from me. I'm in a very rural area and this is unheard of in the 13 years I've been living here. So, I'm keen to improve my security but as its a rented house, I'm reluctant to pay for anything expensive that I can't take with me if I move. I spoke to my…

New lamp not working- does it have to be a halgen bulb to work?
I bought a new table lamp today which takes an ES screw bulb, on the box it recommended a 42w ES Halogen. I only have normal 40w ES bulbs and nothing happends at all when I turn the lamp on :( I know its not the recommended bulb but surely any ES bulb should work? Thanks for any help!

Applying bitumen mastic to a very wet roof- how?
Hello. I recently erected a wooden garden building, nailing the roofing felt as directed, but returned from being away at Christmas to find that I had a leak. It has barely stopped raining since and I have placed a tarpaulin over the building but the leak persists. I have bought a tin of bitumen mastic to trowel onto the…

Door frames and skirting paint removal
I have a house which is about 25 years old and the paint work on the wood work is not to my liking, looks a bad finish. I have read some other posts on here about different methods of removal and due to the amount to do I was thinking about purchasing a heat gun to remove the paint and go back to the bare wood. The concern…

Replacing Radiators
Hi I have what looks like ancient radiators at my home, they are 600mm by 1300mm which are not easily available in most of the diy stores. I was thinking of replacing them by a 600 by 1200 or 1400mm rads. Does anyone of you have any experience as to how difficult this could be as i consider myself as a basic diyer. I think…

New combi boiler fitted - pressure release pipe
I recently had a combi boiler fitted. I now have a copper pipe coming out of the front of the house which (IMO), looks odd. The fitter advises it's the pressure release pipe/ blow off & is an essential safety part of the system. Whilst I don't doubt this, should it look any better than a pipe sticking out? It's at head…

average cost for 2vstory extension?
Hi, does anyone know the average current costs for adding on a side extension, there is currently a single skin garage so presume it would need knocking down and start again instead of converting. Please help...What are my rights?
Good morning, I was hoping someone may be able to give me some advice. I have an ongoing issue with a window company (reasonable size and reputation) who are demanding payment for windows that are not installed to the standard that they should. Long story short my pvc sash windows don't sit right in the frame and when…

Cost of Boiler Replacement
Any idea how much it would cost to replace a combi boiler? I'm based in Merseyside, and its for a 3 bed semi with 7 radiators. I'm going to call a local company for a price but don't know what to expect. Our existing one is 14 years old and whilst its ok, there has been an intermittent problem over the past two years with…

Just wanting to check something RE: radiator re-fitting
We have 3 radiators that we'll need to remove in order to strip wallpaper & then obviously re-wallpaper. I spoke to a fella at work who does a fair bit of decorating as i'd never done it before & he told me what to do. I jumped on YouTube for a visual & noticed a difference in the video to what he told me - it was the use…

Damp patch in concrete floor
My daughter has a young child and doesn't have time to ask this herself. A small wet patch (about 10cm sq) has appeared in the hall carpet next to where it meets the stuck-down plastic tiles in the kitchen. It isn't next to a wall. It came around end of last year, then it dried out, now it is back. As far as they can see,…
