Door frames and skirting paint removal

I have a house which is about 25 years old and the paint work on the wood work is not to my liking, looks a bad finish. I have read some other posts on here about different methods of removal and due to the amount to do I was thinking about purchasing a heat gun to remove the paint and go back to the bare wood. The concern i have is how do i protect the plaster on the walls and the carpet. Are they easy to use in as much as those areas won't be impacted or would they need to be protected and if so what do i use.
Some of the skirting has been drilled into as well so these holes will need filling, would normal filler be suitable for this or is there one recommended for wood.
In an ideal world I would get someone in to do it or replace them all but i am on quite a small budget and with wanting to buy new glass doors, to be able to do that i need to fix the bad finish myself.
Thanks in advance

The plaster will be ok, just be careful with the scraper when close to it or you could end up scoring it.
Personally I'd lift the edges of the carpet and roll it back, to avoid heat damage and the mess from the scraped off paint getting into it. It should go back ok afterwards.0 -
How much do you need to do?
You can get primed mdf architrave pretty cheaply.
