Cracking in new bathroom floor tiles - cause? - update
Had a complete bathroom refit almost a year ago and noticed a few weeks ago that the dead-centre floor tile had a hairline crack. Checked today and the crack now extends the full width of the tile and also now has started to run through the next tile along the same line. Nothing has been dropped on the floor and the other…

Cost for redecorating a flat?
We've got a 2 bed flat that we're looking to rent out, but it needs redecorating - any idea on a ball park figure for a quote? It's two bed, with a lounge, small kitchen and small bathroom. We're looking to have the carpets replaced throughout and magnolia on all the walls - ready for renting. Might also look to replace…

Ugh! Kitchen floor covered in sludge..
We noticed last night that the waste pipe under the kitchen sink appears to be surrounded by a metre wide puddle of brown sludge... it's pretty gross. So while I wait in for the plumber, any ideas what could have caused it? The sink / Wm seem to be draining fine, just looks like this stuff has erupted up the waste pipe…

Kitchen Roll V Individual Flannels!!
Hiya, Sorry for the seemingly random nature of this thread! I've just become a registered childminder and have been informed I need to provide individual drying means for each child after they have washed their hands. So..... the general options appear to be a zillon (cheap) flannels that the kids use once each then chuck…

Carpet or wood floors - what would you go for?
We're moving into our new house soon - nice 1930s 3 bed semi. Currently has ugly old carpet. Upstairs has decent wooden floorboards under the carpets, as do stairs. Trouble is I've always had carpet, and am kind of used to its soft cosiness. Option 1 - fit good quality carpet throughout. Quicker, cheaper and softer, but…

Glass Splashbacks and Upstands
I am seriously considering Glass as opposed to tiles for my kitchen. I have seen in many home magazines and also in Show Rooms I have visited. My kitchen will be completed at the end of this week and I am awaiting a quote from a Grazier who is local to me. They will toughen glass paint to whatever colour etc I wish for a…

Lamona oven hobs. Someone help me?
Hey I am wandering if someone could help me. So I was using my mothers Lamona oven hob. I had the hob on for 2 minutes with a sauce pan on, just heating up some food. When I turn it off, I notice the hob is a complete mess. It looks like the pan has left burn rings, staining and marks. Its an electric hob, with a wipeable…

Leaking/seeping water
I have just discovered we have a leaking problem, I only noticed it for the first time the other day when noticed a damp patch on the hall ceiling/top of wall on exterior wall. From when I first noticed it on saturday it now seems to have developed into a drip coming from the cornice where there is a crack. Not fully sure…

Dunelm Made to Measure curtains - do they have offers?
Not sure if this is the right place but here goes. Does anyone know if Dunelm Mill ever have offers/discount their made to measure curtains? I have two bedrooms that need curtains, full length, and one of the rooms is wall to wall so the quote is rather high . I'm willing to wait if they're likely to have a sale, any…

Gas Oven Won't Light?
My Parkinson Cowan 60GLXa gas cooker has just developed a fault in the main oven. The igniter clicks continuously, but it won't light the burner (and I can't hear the sound of gas being released either). The igniter is OK, I can clearly see it sparking. The fault occurred while the oven was in use (the igniter started…

Painters - what kinda cost?
What sort of figure would I be looking at to get 2 rooms (4.5m x 3.6m each) and the hall/stairs emulsioned? removing egg from brick wall
My house had an egg thrown and it was 24 hours before I saw it. It has dripped and spattered from six foot to ground and left stains. I have tried scrubbing with all these things in turn: when one failed to work I went on to the other- white vinegar baking soda fairy liquid and lastly an enzyme containing Oxy stain…

A birthday bake
Am going to my niece's 5th Birthday tomorrow and I normally bake a cake but I think her Mum's doing it this year. I feel odd not baking something!! Anyone have any ideas of something fun to make and take round? I'm fairly competent in the kitchen - just trying to think of a fun thing... Ooh, butterfly cakes maybe? It's not…

Moneysaving carpet places?
Hi Moneysavers, I've got to the carpetting stage of my first home overhaul (at last!), and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of the better (read, non hiked up prices) carpet type places. I'm assuming that the best known places are probably the most expensive (although I will investigate). Just hoping this might…
