A birthday bake

Am going to my niece's 5th Birthday tomorrow and I normally bake a cake but I think her Mum's doing it this year. I feel odd not baking something!!

Anyone have any ideas of something fun to make and take round? I'm fairly competent in the kitchen - just trying to think of a fun thing...

Ooh, butterfly cakes maybe?

It's not a real kids party, they'll be 4 or 5 there and a few more grown-ups.

have fun at the birthday party!

If it's to involve the littlies, I would personally not take anything that requires baking - if they're anything like our nieces, then it won't be enough of an instant gratification for them. I would go for:

pre made biscuits/ cupcakes - ready to decorate
    rice crispie/cornflake cakes
    DIY pizzas
    something like that?

However, if it's something to make & take in advance to offer alongside everything else, fairy cakes always seem to please I've found - ask your sister though in case of duplication !

  • Sorry, I thought I had already replied to this! Yes it was for an additional thing to take, didn't want to ask what was suitable as they have enough stressing at the moment!

Decided to make butterfly fairy cakes... A bit like these but with a long jelly bean instead of jam for the centre. :)

    Thanks for your advice!

  • Oh for goodness sake, I feel like I'm always posting in the wrong forum! Can someone move this please?

    I feel very silly!!

Maggie, do you bake cakes and sell them or just do it for family? I've been looking up recipes to bake a football themed cake for my son's 5th birthday and breaking out in cold sweats. I don't even own 90% of the utensils required!
  • Hi, if you post on http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.php?f=33 , they're skilled at baking and making something great from what you have in the cupboards!

If you have a wooden spoon, mixing bowl and some cake tins (oh, and a rolling pin for the icing) you can make something like this (an amateur version at least!) http://www.chocolatescakes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Football-Cake-1.jpg if you buy cake ingredients and icing.

Baking is easy - it's a science so as long as you're following a trusted recipe you'll be fine. It's easy to mimic too if you follow some great instructions.

Give it a go! If you're nervous, do a trial run... The best thing about that is cake is never wasted! ;)
