Lines in Plaster (from Plasterboard?)
Hi guys We had our conservatory/extension boarded with plasterboard and then skimmed. Have put on a mist coat and then the first coat (red) and all of a sudden we can now see what looks like the plasterboard lines in certain lights on the main wall (others are fine) They weren't visible when initially plastered or when…

Mending a snapped bed slat?
Morning all, I was looking for a bit of advice on how to mend a broken bed slat. Pic of the damage shown below. I've also included a pic showing how it's attached to the frame as it's a bit of an awkward one. Any thoughts? Cheers :) Wings

Satellite problem. 60% signal but 0.2% quality!
Hmm... I'm trying to fix my mother's satellite dish and reception. The old one had rusted and found the LNB was water logged. Nice... So installed new dish, new receiver, new LNB. One problem! No picture. (1) First question. How much will it cost to get someone in to repair the system? To be honest I've done most of the…

Bathroom floor/vinyl question
Hi. Recently, I bought a new vinyl floor for the bathroom. In prep of laying it, the old bumpy lumpy lino has been removed. This was stuck down pretty good and on removal some of the hardboard underneath came off with it. As a result the subfloor has splintered quite badly in several places. I'm just wondering whether this…

Paint spraying internally
Hi all. I'm in the middle of a full house renovation. Literally every wall and ceiling will be plastered. I've started from the top and seem to be working my way down the house. Now, I never really though the house was that big, but I'm since learning when plastering the hall stair and landing today it's gonna take me ages…

Neighbour extension
Hi, we're looking for some advice based on where we might stand with our neighbours extension. We share a party wall for a lean-to garage and utility area. Our neighbours want to knock down the party wall and build a two-storey extension giving us permission to build a lean-to on their wall. We have no objection to their…

Living room refurbishment - but what about laminate floor?
We are considering various changes to our sitting room, including fitting new french doors, putting in a new fire surround and knocking back some internal walls that jut out into the room. The big problem is that we have a laminate floor laid which we are quite happy with and can't really afford to replace. The alterations…

Same effect as a pelmet, but behind the curtains?
Hope this is in the right place! I've been thinking about making pelmets for the windows in the hopes that they will help with the cold next winter. I don't really want a typical pelmet in my living room, however. Just not the look I wanted. The curtains themselves are pretty voluminous and lined, so they close off the…

Do you paint things before you put them up or after
My OH never listens to me and I asked if we could paint a shed before we put it up as I believe that the best way to paint things is to do it before you use it, ie doors, panels, etc He refused and said we had to put it up first and that 'you dont paint things before they go up in case they get chipped' I am now trying to…

Kinetico Compak water softener problem
Hi, I have a Kinetico Compak water softener that was installed by the previous house owners in 1987. It's worked fine for us until a few weeks ago when it started making a strange intermittent whining sound. The water was still soft(I used a test kit) but then 5 days ago we noticed that the only noise we could hear from it…

Quickie mop refills or Which is the best new mop?
I have this brilliant mop which has a slider on the stick which makes the sponge fold in the middle for squeezing the water out, and a rough scrubby brush thing if you flip the mop over. It's the best mop I have ever owned. It has the word "Quickie" embossed on it. The sponge needs replacing but I cannot recall where I…

Alaris / Athena kitchens - too good to be true?
Any idea how I could check? Their quotes are coming in at 65% of equivalents from john lewis, etc, and one showroom told me a quote of theirs for Pronorm furniture was actually below the purchase price they were offered from the factory. Facebook seems to have a few horror story pages, but there are also a few positive…

Shower drip question
When we turn off our Mira Excel shower it drips, sometimes more than we feel comfortable with and despite raising/lowering the hand piece to try and drain it, it makes little or no difference. But, we have noticed that if we turn the cold tap in the sink (in the bathroom) on and off, the shower drip stops. Maybe someone…

Rising Damp?
I've been searching through the historical threads here just for some advice but can't find anything that fits exactly. We bought an ex local authority house a couple of years ago - at the time the survey did not flag up any moisture readings and once we moved in the whole house was re plastered. This involved bricking up…
