Bathroom floor/vinyl question

Hi. Recently, I bought a new vinyl floor for the bathroom. In prep of laying it, the old bumpy lumpy lino has been removed. This was stuck down pretty good and on removal some of the hardboard underneath came off with it. As a result the subfloor has splintered quite badly in several places.

I'm just wondering whether this is fixable and if so, what's the best method of smoothing it over. Any help is appreciated. This is turning into a longer/harder job than i'd thought it would be. icon_lol.gif

Was the hardboard glued down? How on earth did you manage to splinter the subfloor? Replace ALL the hardboard with new getting substrate as clean as poss first. You'll never patch it.

On seeing these pictures, is it definitely time for a new subfloor? I think what I wrote reads worse than what it looks like but i'm no expert. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

It isn't hardboard, it's plywood. Thats why it's splintered. Instead of replacing you could fill the damaged areas with a 2 part filler. This sets like concrete and is easy to sand to the required level.

Thanks for clarifying phill, it's much appreciated and saves me having to rip up and replace it. Many thanks.

edit: also, can you recommend a brand of this 2 part filler that I need. It isn't the same as polyfilla is it?

No. Not Polyfilla. You may have to go to a proper decorating shop. It comes as a filler plus a hardener in a seperate tube. You mix it when you are ready to use it and it dries hard within about 20 mins ready to sand. Just seen that Screwfix do it http://www.screwfix.com/p/unibond-repair-wood-for-good-280ml/33117
