Mending a snapped bed slat?

Morning all,

I was looking for a bit of advice on how to mend a broken bed slat. Pic of the damage shown below. I've also included a pic showing how it's attached to the frame as it's a bit of an awkward one. Any thoughts?

Cheers :)

    Hello!
I've had the same happen before and found that the only solution was to replace the board. Why don't you unscrew the fixings, remove the cap ends and take the board to a diy shop where you can get another. Most diy shops are very helpful if you explain what you need the wood for and they can usually cut it on their large saws to size.
:A Thanks to all the lovely people who contribute their advice! :A

My son got a few broken slats when one of his drunk friends decided to jump on his bed! My father-in-law, who was a joiner by trade, made about a dozen replacement slats so he had spare incase any more got broken.

    or,
use a splint underneath it and tape it all up, with epoxy resin.
then swap it for the lowest slat on the bed. foot end.
the lack of springiness there, wont matter.
    Get some gorm.

Don't strap it up. Thats a stupid idea. It will always be a weak point and go again. Take it out and take it to your local timber merchants where they will cut one to size for you.

It depends on how good your timber merchants are some do sell them some don't.
You could replace a sprung slat with a standard beech slat but it would need to be slightly thicker as standard slats are not as strong.
You can purchase sprung slats online if you have problems tracking them down locally but the postage charges make this a more expensive option.

  • Hi wings,

If it is a single bed, I have some sitting in my garage, just can't seem to throw things away (ask my wife!). it's yours for the price of postage.

    regards Al

No, but if you take the old one with you they will cut a piece of timber dowm to size. All Timber merchants have bench saws in their premises and are normally happy to cut timber down to required sizes, even if it is only 3' long.
