Kinetico Compak water softener problem

Hi,
I have a Kinetico Compak water softener that was installed by the previous house owners in 1987. It's worked fine for us until a few weeks ago when it started making a strange intermittent whining sound.
The water was still soft(I used a test kit) but then 5 days ago we noticed that the only noise we could hear from it was a constant water draining sound. I checked the salt level and it was almost full which was odd as I had not refilled it for about 3 weeks and it normally is almost empty after that period of time. The water is also now hard.
24 years without a problem is great but now I am not sure if this is a problem I can fix myself. I have seen in another thread that these softeners do not require servicing but the brine inlet can get blocked.
There is a company selling 2nd hand Compak's and this is a possibility if I cannot get it fixed.
Has anybody got any experience of cleaning these out and any advice about whether I should try this myself or call in a specialist company ?
TIA
Steve
