ipod through ceiling speakers

Options
I am refurbishing my kitchen and would like to be able to play music from my ipod through stereo ceiling speakers.

Any ideas on the best budget way to do it?

Also, could I connect the TV to them?

all you need is an amp somewhere to drive the speakers, then you can connect whatever source you want to the amp

You need an AV amp for your TV, what is your budget?

Not necessary tell us what you current set up and budget is?

wouldn't recommend celling speaker for normal TV watching though.

Can't speak for the telly but as far as the ipod is concerned I saw/heard a little gizmo the other day which plugs in and is effectively a radio transmitter - cheap as chips on ebay apparently, no more than a few quid. If your radio is connected to your speakers you just tune the radio to the tx and voila - ipod music in stereo.

    Cheers

Get a Cambridge iPod dock from Richer Sounds for £16 or so.

Any decent HiFi Amp with a couple of Line inputs will do. There's plenty of makers of ceiling speakers.

You do NOT need an AV amp to connect a TV, unless the TV ONLY has HDMI or optical audio out. Check the TV or the manual to see what audio outputs it has. If it has twin phono (red and white circular plugs) you can just connect those to an Aux in on the amp.

However - much will depend on whether or not the other occupants of the house want to share your music - which room(s) are above the kitchen?

It's pointless getting the radio gizmo when the iPod is right next to the amp, and can be plugged into it.

I would assume ceiling speakers for the kitchen and TV for a separate room.

If we know the budget then things may be easier otherwise Sonos may be the way to go.

i would recommend going to a richer sounds and see if you can get any openbox/display items - always good for a deal in there!!
I would also be careful about which speakers you choose for a kitchen ceiling as moisture and grease are not the friend of a standard speaker cone!

my recommended cheapo set up would be:
    ipod headphone to phono cable
cheap amp - bottom end cambridge one is about 80 quid, sometimes cheaper in store
kitchen/bathroom ceiling speakers - no idea of budget but get the best you can afford

if you wanted to do the tv you would have to see what connections are availible from the tv, worse case is use the headphone socket and the same type of cable from the ipod into the amp...
but if you want to go for a multi-room set up it gets a lot more complex and expensive unless you can run some big cables around!!

I will try and answer all of the above!

Both are in the same room, I'm not overly fussed about the TV through ceiling speakers. The TV will be added later as we cannot afford it at this stage.

I was hoping to hide the amp in a cupboard and run cables behind the plasterboard to the docking station which, presumably would be on a worktop.

I've seen the Cambridge amp and will probably pop across to Richer Sounds.

    Thanks all.

do you have the standard ipod dock? it would charge the ipod and has a line out which would save you buying a new dock
(charge it if it was plugged in obviously!)
