Replace gas fire with the most powerful alternative
We have had to have our gas flue removed during work on our loft conversion. Our sitting room is very hard to heat and I badly miss it! The fire has to be fitted on an internal wall. I don't therefore think another gas fire is possible - correct me if I'm wrong. Is it possible to get a poweful electric fire - most of them…

Question about laminate flooring
I'm hoping someone here will be able to help. We've recently had water ingress into our flat (from the flat above) and it has lead to our laminate flooring becoming raised at the edges. It's been dry for several weeks now but it is still damaged. Anyway, we can claim on insurance to get the laminate replaced but the room…

Calgon and hard water in washing machine
Ive been wondering about Calgon and I have read on a website that actually calgon doesnt do anything that detergent does, because detergent has built in limescale remover as long as you use the right amount. However, what with all the emphasis on concentrated washing liquids and of course money saving, I try to use as…

Woodworm treatment
I'm buying a house which has previously had a full chemical floor treatment against common furniture beetle applied to one room downstairs following infestation. That was in 1986. There was a 30-year guarantee on that room but the firm has since gone out of business. I've just had the whole house checked by a woodworm…

energy saving bulbs - why so dim?
Is it still possible to buy "old style" 100w glass bulbs? I have a 100w glass bulb in the lounge but this popped the other night, I tried an 11w energy saver (apparently this is equivalent to a 40w old bulb but it seemed very dim). Then found an 18w which I think is possibly 80w equivalent but this wasn't really much…

Replacing shed roof
Our shed is in need of repair. I have been thinking that we will be getting someone to do the job, as neither of us is brilliant in diy, plus OH hates it. To add to this, the shed is quite big (10' x 8'), in an awkward location (backs to the fence and one side is next to the garage, so not an easy access. But yesterday OH…
