Ikea sliding doors used as normal sliding doors??

Hi
Just to see if anyone can help, even though I may have been a bit hasty!!

I got some cheap ikea sliding doors from Ebay, that are ususally used with their own PAX range of wardrobes. I want to use them as normal sliding doors, and I have also got IKEA stolmen storage system to go behind the doors, and screw into the wall (also cheap from gumtree)

Anyone know if this can be done?? Have a carpenter coming tomorrow to have a look and price up, but panicking now in case the doors are only usable on the wardrobe carcases!! I wanted the carpenter to fit the doors and build the frame etc for them to go onto.

Also, I really love some of the PAX warrobe accessories such as the pull out put and bobs, so thinking of whether I could get those in there somehow, e.g. pull out trouser rail ??

Can you tell I am a total DIY novice?? Hubby is at work til late most days, so left it all to me.!! I am a bit worried now that I have tried to get cheap fitted wardrobes, but it may all go horribly pete tong!!!

Any help or comments really appreciated. thanks

Your carpenter should be able to string up the doors - the rails they come with are designed to attach to the frame of the wardrobe, but your carpenter should be able to create something for this to attach to. He won't be able to reduce their size, only fill in any space around them which you'll need to paint up (probably best plasterboarded).

As for using the pax system with the stolmen I can't see this - the stolmen system is designed to attach to verical poles, whereas the pax system screws into side panels. You could build up something to attach to.

My thought with all this however, is surely by the time you've paid for a carpenter and materials, you could have just bought the pax wardrobes in the first place with no worry over what will fit? The expensive part is the doors, not the frames or fittings.

    Thanks IC

You are right about the cost, but I have a chinmey breast and an curved ceiling, so cant fit a full row of PAX into that space!!

I have a double and a single PAX that are 200cm high for 7 years, but we have stuff on top of them and all over the room! Wanted to get these floor to ceiling ones to organise that whole space including alcoves etc and finally have a place for everything in my room as itis always clutterde!! My old wardrobes will be going into the kids bedroom, and will also finally get their room more organised.

Got the doors for £90 inc collection, and the carpenter has said approx £250 for labour and all materials - £350 so far.
I have got the stolmen for £140 from gumtree, hubby will be fitting this IF the doors go on ok, and we still want this system behind them. SO just uner £500 for everything... which is a lot more than I planned, but if it gets everything in, then it's worth it!

Someone here has used PAX doors as room dividers, some of the pictures may help you plan your project.

  • Hi,
I got hubby to buy the pax doors for ds1 when they were being discontinued (black ones last year). just needed to cover his mess!!! as with most of the jobs oh is capable of doing it took him 8 mths to get round to it. Needless to say he then found one of the floor runners was missing. Easily purchased an extra setfrom ikea for nominan/ l cost. no carcass purchasedjust fitted to floor and ceiling.hthb
