Background Electricity Usage 8760 hours a year
With the looming electricity rise I have been going round the house checking the power usage of 'always on' things. The first thing I found is my clock radio by the bed. I use my mobile phone for alarms now so no idea why I left it on. It uses 6w continuously. There are 8760 hours in a year. 6 x 8760 is 52 kwh a year. The…

Creating an account with British gas
Hi, so I moved into a property in December and received the usual letters from British Gas to pay what I’ve used. I’ve not been able to register with my online account - it’s asking for my name and address as they appear on any correspondence they’ve sent me. What confuses me is they don’t know my details because I haven’t…

Standing charge increase explanation (and why it doesn't seem to make sense)
I appreciate that MSE has supposedly "answered " this question but I'm far from convinced they have, and they helpfully locked the thread so nobody can actually discuss it. The first reason for the standing change increase is "to cover the costs of companies recently going bust" but that seems to make no sense at all.…

Never been billed.
Hi. I moved into my flat last March and tried to sign up with bulb energy. I thought i had managed it and sent the pictures of my electric meter readings. But I've tried to log in to give them up to date readings and found i can't log in. Looked for info and found they have gone bust now. I've had no letters or contact…

Energy usage - monitor
Hi, I'm after any advice and recommendations for a (not too expensive) tool that will show me how much energy I'm using. I've got fairly old smart meters in my cellar, and when I contacted my energy provider (E.On/Sainsbury's) they advised that they are unable to provide a read-out device for use in the house and that I…

Getting a comparison for electricity.
Are there any places at all where it is possible to compare the new April tariffs, even if you could compare are there any suppliers who are accepting new customers? I asked because I'm on an E7 standard tariff with a night rate of just over 18p/kwh and read on a thread here tonight that EDF are just over 13p/kwh for their…

Direct debit 3x
Please help me to understand why the price cap rise is 54% but my monthly direct debit has trebled and not just gone up by around the 54%. I got the eon fix which was a fix at the new price cap rate. Is it because the direct debit includes other the other charges too that have gone up not just the price cap?

Trying to set up a DD for Shell Energy for months
My 86 year-old father-in-law was moved over to Shell Energy in October last year. Due to his ongoing health and memory problems we initially found it impossible to find any record (letters or emails etc) about the account. I used Shell Energy's chat service in January asking them to send information and help us open an…
