Well it's been downright awful here in Somerset for the last couple of days with non-stop rain! Just wondering how committed you lovely peeps are... have you been put off by gardening when it's raining? Are you a shrinking violet or a hardy perennial? Just a light hearted thread ☔🌧️

Best use for wood ashes
It's the time of year when I'm using the wood burner, and my ashes bucket is filling up with a mixture of wood ash and bits of charcoal. I understand that wood ash is high in potash, and charcoal is a good soil improver. But if I tip it around the plants at this time of year, the potash will leach away before the plants…

PFAS in garden compost bags.
Those bought at garden centres etc. are pretty rubbish nowadays w/o thinking about the PFAS issue. Anyone any thoughts on this subject? I am looking for ways to stop using this stuff in my allotment and only (where I really have to) for flowers and shrubs I don't eat. Thanks.

Grasses of the tall variety
I know nothing about them but like the idea of movement in a garden surrounded by fences. Are there any varieties that are easily maintained? I tried the little blue grass but although lovely for a couple of years it got overwhelmed with dead bits that didn't come out with a comb etc as suggested elsewhere. They eventually…

Cedar shed or something cheaper?
I need to replace a shed that is now falling down, rotten and beyond repair. Have been looking online and I like the look of cedar wood sheds, but not the price! Before I invest a lot of time investigating and picking one, does anyone have experience of having one? Would you get another one? Thanks

Spotty cooking apples.
My cooking apples have black spots on them and some of them cause splits in the skin. Not all the apples are affected and the dessert apple trees are not affected. I have given the tree lime in the last two years and plan on giving it a "winter wash". I wondered if it was bitter pit. The affected apples do not store. Any…

Can i cut my beech hedge back now, or should I wait for the leaves to actually turn brown?
Hi. This is about what was a sizeable front hedge that I'm taking back to a manageable level. Back in Spring I cut its height down dramatically to around 2', and this required cutting through some sizeable stems, often a good 2-4" diameter. I also trimmed back the house side to a manageable degree, but left the roadside…

Recommend a leaf mulcher
Hi I'm after an easy to use leaf mucher for the garden with a sturdy bag that doesn't split. Or something where the bags are cheap and easy to change. I've currently got a Hyundai but I've been through 2 bags where the Zip seam has split. Up to about £50.

Leaf Vacuum/Blower
I have a leaf vacuum (see below). Every time or every other time I use it the bag splits where the zip is sewn in and I need to buy a new bag. Surely this isn't normal. Hyundai aren't interested. Are there better makes, or can you get disposable bags (like you do with hoovers) that you can dispose of after each clear up.…

Pink Flamingo
Bought a Pink Flamingo standard tree from local supermarket about a month ago. The branches were only about 12 inches long but have since gone mad to over double that. Problem is, it looks a bit sparse in the middle. Should I prune it back to where the shoots branch out which would take it back to nearly the 12 inch length…
