A catalogue of trial, error and advice
Hi All, I recently purchased a property with a very neglected garden that will require a full renovation. I'm looking for some advice on if my plans are sensible. I'm going to be starting with essentially an empty rectangle (no patio/garden room etc) so please feel free to make any and all suggested layout changes.…

Keeping hens and ducks chat.
As a hen and cockerel keeper myself I thought it would be interesting to ask what you name your hens and cockerels and also ask how many eggs you get per day. I know the egg laying changes when they moult but just thought it would be interesting to see how many you get. I have hens that are named Bluebell, Muesli,…

Awful weather - typical Brits talk
Well it's been downright awful here in Somerset for the last couple of days with non-stop rain! Just wondering how committed you lovely peeps are... have you been put off by gardening when it's raining? Are you a shrinking violet or a hardy perennial? Just a light hearted thread ☔🌧️

Flower Bed Sleepers - Best Treatment?
Hi everyone, Recently moved into a new property. At the old house we used to have some railway flower bed sleepers (from the previous owner) which were the very old ones where tar used to oooze out in the summer. They slowly started to rot and disintergrate. The ones at our new place seem a lot newer and in a lot better…

'Creeping Jenny' - Lysimachia
I've been looking online for seeds and can find none for love or money. All I see is plug pants at a fancy price. Can anyone point me to a supplier? This is the green trailer that hangs for metres under hanging baskets etc.

Eco friendly way to clear a pond of algae?
Any recommendations for eco friendly way of removing algae? The pond is approx 6 ft in diameter and mostly 6 inches deep. I've used straw bales in the past but am undecided how effective they are.

Help please with water butt part.
I've just picked up another water butt and I need a part to allow the feed from the drainpipe to the existing water butt to now 'divert' into each butt, so some sort of diverter part. Hope it's clear what I'm looking for? I've looked on various sites, plenty of such items, but a lot are screw threaded for use in domestic…

Can anyone identify this plant please?
Hello and thanks for reading this message. While weeding my new allotment I've uncovered a thriving plant my fellow allotmenteers aren't sure about so I'm hoping MSEers can help. Here is a photo And here is a close up. I can't help being suspicious that it's a weed partly because it's doing so well whereas all the good…

Lilac tree looking odd in its third year
After a fairly mild London winter, our lilac tree has some buds that haven't opened yet but there are other parts of the tree where new branches have grown, topped with flowerheads. The first two years were fine so I'm wondering why things are different this year?

Ivy
How do I kill ivy. I planted it about 10 years ago without knowing how crazy it would get, I know I'm daft. It's now taken over the fence and it's bigger in next doors garden, plus has been climbing the wall of the house. I cut it right back in on my side at the end of the summer but it's grown back as it was before. How…

Leylandii withering
Hi all, I've noticed recently that some of the Leylandii that I planted in my garden in Aberdeenshire back in November 2022 have started to wither on some branches. They grew fine last year, its just this year that this problem has crept up. They have been fed regularly via root drench and foliar spray from April to…

Any ideas as to what this tree is and is it dead ?

Has tomorite grow bag mixture changed?...
Has anyone noticed if tomorite grow bag mixture has changed. Seems to be more fibrous and strong smell of manure. Also, doesn't seem to absorb the water as well, just drains through?

Advice - cleaning outdoor ceramic glass patio table.
Need advice on cleaning an outdoor ceramic glass patio table. Its a dull ceramic - not shiny. Bought second hand in the box, can't remember seeing any stains when unboxing. Just uncovered table after winter and there is what appears to look like a water mark/stain on the table. It won't come out with just hot soapy water…

Can anyone recommend reasonably priced potting compost this year?
I grow some cuttings , perennials etc for charitable causes, so get through quite a few bags of compost each season. It gets dearer and dearer and poorer and poorer quality and harder to come by. ( no garden centres near me) .This year I bought multipurpose peat free from Aldi and yesterday some Levingtons. Both are pretty…

Garden wall idea.
Looking for advice/criticism of our garden wall plan. I’m not imaginative or artistic (and himself just agrees with everything) so all input welcomed. It’s the middle section of our garden. Patio nearest the house, then the undecided bit, with the grass and flowers etc furthest away. The grass etc is a little lower than…

Long lasting furniture

Composting blackberry thorns
I cut back my blackberry bush, which I bought from a garden centre, then cut the thorns/off-cuts into pieces of about 1 or 2 feet. I then put them, a few buckets worth, on my large composter and have since added old compost on top. Have I made a mistake? I have now read that there is a risk of it re-rooting in the…
