O2 at the moment being the exclusive iPhone carrier in addition to being the biggest mobile telco in UK by customer numbers, would be in the best position to try and lead the market. Rationally, from the business POV, if you're the most in demand, you would rationally try and lock consumers in as long as possible and minimise their choice; this would not necessarily make them happy but you would get more revenue. Trying to increase revenue at the customers' expense is a fundamental raison d'etre of doing business, in the same way that trying to minimise spending at corporations' expense is for MoneySavers.

It is up to O2's competition to spoil their game. And the hordes of consumers clamouring to switch away, of course :p
Thats what I was aiming to say without me rambling on- O2 could well afford to offer much better deals to the marketplace on 12 month contracts due to their financial clout (if 3 can offer 500 mins/unlimited texts for 25 quid a month I'm sure O2 can), but choose not to as they wish to lead the market towards extended contracts.

I feel that is a little bit harsh- and you do sound like you work for O2 with all those figures. 12 month contracts are significantly higher than £5 a month more in comparison. if you can find them nowdays

Drop the false accusations, please; my information is based only on looking at their website, and then talking to their Retentions team, and reading this thread.

If you'd rather post false information too, then perhaps you haven't done these things. It really isn't that difficult to look:

    http://www.o2.co.uk/mobilestariffs/tariffs/paymonthly/paymonthlytariffs

The reason that 12 month deals are not as good is because of less discount, as I already said, not because the tariffs are further apart, as you claim.

For example, the full price tariff of 400 minutes and 500 messages costs, before any retention discount offers,

    12 months £35
    18 months £30
    24 months £25
    Simplicity £20

The Retentions team really weren't that bothered about pushing 24 month contracts, as your innuendo suggests, and recommended 18 months to me.

Oddly, having talked the them in some detail about retention discounts on monthly tariffs with a new phone, I found that after discount all the deals came to the same price of £20, whether a £25 tariff with £5 off, £30 less £10, or £35 less £15. Although they will mention Simplicity first. So almost the only decision I had was whether to have a new phone or the £150 credit.

To expand on that slightly, although the 24 month contract is again another £5 a month cheaper, the discount offered was also reduced by £5, so there was no difference, except that an extra pro-rata £50 cash in the account effectively reduces the £20 discounted tariffs to £11.67 in the last 6 months, whether with a phone or not. I almost went for this, as I'll anyway hope to look after this one and be looking for a deal without a phone next time, but have gambled that deals will have improved a bit more by then.

O2 don't offer 12 month deals anymore to new customers or old ones apparently- so I don't know where you are getting the £35 figure from.

Then why did you invent a more than £5 difference in price for something you now claim doesn't exist?

If they had been phased out totally, it would have only happened in the past month, without me realising, so apologies to other people. However, when they were still there published on the website, the tariff was exactly as I've already said, and not in line with your hyperbole that the difference was more.

But I doubt they've gone completely. What's more, you've just replied on a thread where someone is discussing their present offer on a 12 month contract.

To clarify this, and quoting O2 Retentions just a few minutes ago, since 1st August they don't do 12 month deals on offers with a phone included. But they do still have 12 month offers for people without a phone, and with the so-called upgrade credit added to the account.

Those offers may arguably not be as good, due to less discount built in (as I've said 3 times now), but they are still there for people who phone up, so kindly stop conjecturing things if you can't be bothered to check

I never said that it was just O2 who charged more at all, I was talking about the market in general- with the exception of 3 all 12 month contracts are more than £5 in comparison. The 18 month minimum tariff on O2 has been common knowledge for new customers/retentions for roughly a month now.

O2 contract tariffs have not been more than £5 different at any time in the last couple of years. And their website confirmed this at any time until recently.

Now you reckon I'm lying about the content of a phone call only a few minutes ago, or perhaps the person at the other end was lying to me?
For corroboration independent of me, you've only very recently posted about someone else's 12 month offer. Would you suggest that person was inventing this as well as I am?

As I said, kindly confine yourself to facts, not hearsay and innuendo, and especially please avoid fabricating inaccurate generalisations for the sake of argument.

I never said that you were lying, so please stop flaming me for my opinions about O2.

Sorry - but can I just interrupt the fight for a quick (unrelated) question? This is my first post on here so please be gentle with me! I have been offered a deal via O2 retentions which includes £150 credit - am I right in thinking this is not the same as cashback?

Yeah- it'll be credited to your account as a lump sum:). You can ask O2 to spread the credit per month if you want to do it that way as well:).

 Thank you - so it works out as extra money/credit for me to spend per month/contract rather than a discount or money off on my monthly rental for example?
