As my contract is about to expire in a month I was looking for a free/cheap iPhone4 similar to my current contract (£35pm 600min/500texts/unlimited data) as my current iPhone 3G is dead. Annoyingly o2 offered pretty weak upgrade options online so thought I'd look at my options elsewhere.

Saw the 3 offer of £35pm and £29 handset for the white iPhone 4, also the upgrade offer on mobiles.co.uk which I'd be able to get hefty cashback on but preferred to avoid them if I could.

Got put through to retentions and explained the 3 offer I was looking to move to and the lady I spoke to offered me a free white iPhone 4 with 600 mins, unlimited texts and 500mb data for £37pm (24 months) so pretty similar to what I've got. Happy with that as got a free handset of the phone I wanted without paying much more.

you can get the same deal from carphonewarehouse + £70 cashback from quidco.

I'm "gold tier" with o2 so can upgrade 3 months early but when I called they were less than useless!!!

I want the Galaxy S2 and the best they can offer is as per the website for any new customer - 24 months, 600 mins, unlimited texts and 500MB internet for £32 p/m - but the phone is £99 up front!

I told her Three were doing 500 mins, 5000 texts and 1GB internet for £30 p/m but the phone for free but this made no difference at all!

Oh well, looks like Three will be gtting my business in September!!

Wow that sounds like a good deal to me. How did you convince them? I called them few days back and asked if t hey can give me some discount for being with O2 for more than 3 years, they said NO.

Why is it that people automatically assume that they should be entitled to a discount for long tenure? I have been with Barclays bank since 1999. Does that mean I should be able to withdraw £20 yet only have £15 debited from my account as I am a "loyal customer"? No. If price is the only factor, then go to a budget provider. You get what you pay for in most cases. I have been with 02 since they were Cellnet and had a Phillips "U" phone. I have never been anywhere and not got a signal, my bills are always correct and I always speak to the UK when I call. I have plenty of mates on all other manner of networks who are always moaning about no signal, no internet, delayed texts, foreign call centres, & in return, they're saving about £100 a year. Worth the hassle? No ta. And no I don't work for them :)

    CC limits £26000

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.

Ive been with o2 since mobile phones were invented!! Approx 12 years.

When I called them up to discuss an upgrade they offered me very little in comparison to the deals Ive seen other companies promoting.

Obviously o2 know they have excellent coverage and UK only based call centres but Im not sure that justifies the cost.

Anyway I keep hearing about how as soon as you cancel the contract which I have done then the company will be back on the phone offering you deals to change your mind. Do o2 do this?

Ive seen a few phones but Im tempted to wait a couple of weeks incase o2 try this,

    Hi Kriss Boy,
I'm on O2. They've never phoned me about renewals I've always approached them. In fact my current contract ended a couple of months ago and has just rolled on so I'm in the process of negotiating/renewing.

Last time my contract was up for renewal they didn't have much to offer so I shopped around decided Virgin offered better and called O2 for my PAC so I could to move to Virgin, fully intending to do so. I was put through to retentions who quickly decided they could match the Virgin deal. Although I was on a sim-only contract, I got a new phone, 300 mins, unlimited texts, free calls to landlines and free 100mb daily data (the last of which I don't even use) for £10, which was much better than my existing deal.

I've just come up to renewal time again and it's the same thing. I went into O2 shop who said "ooh that's a good deal we can't improve on that but call customer services as they have more discretion to offer better deals." I called and the initial offer was not promising: new phone but lower minutes and higher cost. When I indicated that I would have to shop around and might have to end my contract as I knew there were better deals eleswhere they said "If you find one come back to us and we'll see what we can do."

It's a bit of a pain but I've already found better deals with Virgin, Three and T Mobile and will go back to O2 to see if they can match, if not I'll get the PAC code and port number to a new network. To get a decent deal you do need to do your homework: know what you want and what other networks arre offering, and you do need to be prepared to leave if it really comes to the crunch. The last bit is tricky, because I've found O2 coverage and customer services to be trouble free and if they just agree to give me a new phone I'll happily stay with them. If not, I'll take my business elsewhere. It's a mature market with fewer new customers so networks need to work hard to keep the ones they've got happy...but consumers need to work to get the best deal too!
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!
