Totally agree, little reason to stick with O2 it would seem. I got a good deal from buymobilephones though (well, good for me anyway!)

Was on discounted £15/month 18 month tariff with O2 (200mins 300txt) but didn't really use anywhere near these limits. Phoned O2 and asked to keep this tariff and get a new phone (Nokia 6303) but didn't get any joy there.

Had a poke around the other suppliers and found the following on buymobilephones:

    £20/month 18 months on T-Mobile
    100 txt
    100 mins
    'unlimited' data
    free Motorola Milestone*

Throw in a bit of cashback (via redemption) and £25 from Quidco and I was a more than happy camper so decided to go with that. I did try O2 one more time but they couldn't get anywhere near it so got the PAC and walked away.

*bit of a jump from a 6303 but I figured I might as well go for a higher spec phone seeing as the internet tariffs were reasonable
  • Hello,

I've been a loyal customer to O2 for over 8 years. Every year I have upgraded I have always got the phone I wanted on the trarriff I wanted and ALWAYS had a reduction on the price, last contract I had £15 knocked off the monthly fee.

So, my new contract is up for renewal, I found the mobile I wanted - HTC Desire. My calls and texts are very low, averaging 20 mins & 20 text a month. I use my mobile mostly for internet.

I contacted o2 today (retentions dept) to find the best deal they could offer me, £45 per month (I can't remember the number of text or calls) unlimited wifi, unlimited internet (changing to 700mb limit in oct) and FREE handset.

I explained that I wanted an 18 month contract & free handset and they explained they could not give free handset on 18 month contract, handset would cost £52 & it would be £35 a month. They were not willing to go lower than £35 a month and they would not budge on the £52 for the handset. I have looked online and they are offering me their deals that they have online, they would not offer me any reduction for being a LOYAL customer?????

I explained i was not happy with what they were offering me and quoted better deals by t-mobile & orange and 02 said they could not match those deals???? I phoned up again giving them another chance to match other deals but again they would not budge!!!

    Grrrrrr, I'm really angry!

I dont want to go with another provider as 02 has the best coverage (I live in wales, some areas have poor or no coverage)

    ANY advice please????

    Cancel contract.
    Purchase phone.
    Goto Quidco.
Get simplicity deal and £100 cashback.

No loyalty unless your special. Who defines 'special' ? O2.

I would move to either giffgaff on a £10 goody bag (100mins unlimited internet & text) or tesco payg £10 gives you £30 less £8 for internet bolt on. Both are on O2 network so coverage will be same and purchase phone.

If you then want to go back to o2 wait till the quidco cashback is on and move to the simplicity deals

    Did you accept either?
Did you mention iphone4 or HTC desire?
I can upgrade now but just cant decide what to do

Hi no I didn't mention the Iphone 4, did mention the HTC Desire and got a similar offer as I did for the Samsung Galaxy S.

Didn't take either offer as it's such a big jump from what I currently have - 1200 minutes, 1000 texts, unlimited data for £27 a month. I spoke to someone in the o2 shop today who told me that my current 40% discount (I think it was a £40pcm contract originally) has no end date on it, so I could try to keep the discount on any new tariff they offer me, although he couldn't guarantee that they would do it.

By the sound of things you being loyal has nothing to do with it. View it from O2s perspective you can say you are actually cost them £15pm extra for keeping you due to your discount. Rather than someone whos paying the full priced tariff.

Therefore if you were in there shoes would you give that customer further discounts to keep them on? There are probably as many new customers signing on as there are old ones leaving to other networks. Its always best to shop around when the contract ends in the same way as you do with car insurance.

If coverage is the issue you will be limited in network choice but not by companies like Tesco or giffgaff who also use O2 network.

Alternatively buy through a reseller for the best price for phone and tariff. Or go som only and stump up for the handset. There are plenty of options out there.
  • Sometimes I think that life is too short to worry about a £5 per month saving over 18 months. If you're happy with the service from O2, shut up and get on with it.
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

For 20 minutes and twenty texts a months is it worth being on contract? You can get a bolt on for £5 per month for web. Or get a £15 sim only.

I absolutely agree with o2 having decided loyalty means zip these says (been with them 11 years, this year I'm paying £8 than last year and getting less). But to be fair to o2, if they're giving you a free phone and £15 and you NEVER go over your line rental, you're not the type of customer they'll go out of their way to keep.

I just rang O2 and there are no discounts and they'll get rid of my £10 loyalty discount when I upgrade.
I have found that these days I mainly use my phone for web surfing so I'm not sure whether to choose:
    1) A Simplicity contact 12 month with £100 cashback.
    2) A Tesco PAYG (triple value when you top up plus £2 / week web surfing).
    3) GiffGaff - currently 1/2 price goody bags.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi all,

I'm sure that everyone is aware of the changes that O2 have implemented in the last month for contracts, namely:
    1) An extra £5 / month if you use web/data and also its capped.
    2) Removal of loyalty discounts (between £5-£10 / month) on average.

So, for someone on a £35 / month contract (600 minutes, 18 month) reduced to £25/£30 going upgrading, they are looking at at least a £10 / month increase.

Furthermore, O2 are giving us the spin that if you want the phone free or cheap or any other kind of reduction in monthly cost, 24 month is the way to go.

So overall, we're getting even less value. This is not to mention the fact that other network's retentions are still okay and negotiable.

Now, given that if you want to stay on the O2 network you can still take out either:
    1) Simplicity 12 month contract with £100 Quidco cashback.
    2) A GiffGaff SIM which currently has half-price top up deals.
    3) A Tesco Mobile PAYG SIM which triples the value of topups AND you can pay just £2 per week for unlimted browsing (although this might not be as good as Orange where so long as you top up £10 / month you get unlimted browsing).

I think I'm going to give up with O2 as I can't get a good deal and I am not going to go from £25/month to £40/month on an 18 month contract.
