. . . When I threatened to cancel the DD and pay by another method they claimed that a DD is required to be on a fixed deal.  Anyone know if that's correct?
That is my understanding too. It's in their Ts&Cs that you pay by monthly direct debit.
I think you're right.  It's funny (NOT) how it's a 3 weeks plus turnaround for queries to Avro's finance department, they don't respond to emails, and their live chat is constantly down, yet they contact you immediately if you cancel your direct debit

Could well be that Avro are still paying commission if they gain a customer from another company via the CEC, but not for a tariff swap by an existing Avro customer.
Hiding deals offered by your existing supplier makes a nonsense of the CEC's ethical claims to show all suppliers.
Avro have claimed they don't pay commission at all. But even so, other suppliers who do not pay commission (i.e. where you have to go directly to the supplier's site) are still listed on CEC.
Something's going on between Avro and CEC but no-one is coming clean.

I think it's fairly universal to issue an automatic response to cancelling a DD. Not just the energy sector.
Following on from your earlier post, I would hazard a guess that a £300 credit balance at this time of year is not too far off kilter. It depends on your expected consumption, of course, but the amount of 2 -3 months of standard direct debit would probably be what they would expect to see you through Winter without going into a debit balance (which Avro, in particular, just hate).

  • I am sure that they would "hate" it and would prefer every customer to be in credit to the tune of £500. My own view is rather the opposite. The grey area all along has been to what extent Avro or whoever has the right to unilaterally increase the credit balance to suit their financial objectives. And where the customer stands if he cancels a D/D (for want of being able to change it) whilst his account is in credit by more than a £ or two. It would be interesting to know if any such dispute has been tested legally as opposed to the impression created by all the threats, huffing and puffing and so on.

I've just been looking at Avro's current prices for fixed rate deals, and there's some pretty scary prise rises coming up.

I'm on the 'Simple and Super12M' fixed rate tariff until next year.

Looking at their current fixed rate offering, 'Simple and 12M Fixed', it would give me an increase of £750/year - almost a 40% increase on my current bill.

Does that sound possible, or have I got my numbers mixed up somewhere?

Just in case people didn't see it.

Hope they sort this out, I was just moving to them...

Avro have finally hiked SC for both fuels to the level other suppliers did many months ago, kwh rate is dead on new Oct 1st energy cap level that only has to apply to SVR tariffs

I think you may need to ensure it is a genuine copy of the whole offer document (email/letter) rather than just a 'transcript' which could have been invented at any time.

I have had another message from the ombudsman. Avro's attempt to have the complaint thrown out has been rejected. The investigation stage can now begin.
The ombudsman has completed the investigation. My complaint has been upheld, on all counts.
    • Avro did not act in accordance with the Standard Licencing Conditions when they blocked the transfer to another supplier, as the debt was under 28 days old.
    • Avro customer service failed to address the complaint to a satisfactory standard
The ombudsman has ordered that Avro send a written letter of apology and a payment of £50.

I get the impression that this is Avro just "getting in line" with whatever alternative offers are open to you?

In the final analysis, it's down to whether you can or cannot do better elsewhere. Energy prices have hugely increased across the board so a 40% increase currently doesn't sound absurd.
