I spoke to them last night because the online cancellation method resulted in an automated email suggesting I ring them to have a chat. (Automated my ****! It was clearly manually typed.)

I rang anyway, cancelled and then rejected his offer of half price HD (a 5er) and half-price line rental (another 5er). Chap noted that I had been with Sky for a long time and added to my notes that I was cancelling because it is "too expensive".

31 days to go, I'm quite prepared to cancel if nothing hapens.

we've lost service now. happy to pay 1/2 price but we just don't watch it enough to justify full price

I looked up this on the internet

    http://contactus.sky.com/uk/sky-tv/cancel-sky-tv

It clearly says cancel by email

    Filled this contact form in

    https://contactus.sky.com/uk/sky-tv/cancel-sky-tv/email

and got an email back to say It was not possible to cancel by email and that the service would continue unless I phoned them.

So phoned at 13p plus 6p per minute, with me saying I dont want any offers I just want to cancel and I wanted the 31 days to start from the date of the email. As per this note, that said it would be backdated from the date of the email.

It should have been straightforward, but oh no, they wanted a reason I was leaving, what was my new price?

Please just cancel, i said this is why i emailed, I did not want the hard sell.

Would they back date my 31 days, no, they couldnt, my email failed data protection. How?, because I had not put a password on it.
Where did it ask for a password I asked? It didnt. they answered. Is it secure to put a password on an email? I asked
    No, they agreed.
Could I speak to a manager?, no,::mad: there was not one available.
Twenty minutes of trying to cancel the account and discussions around data protection and freedom of information, (i asked how many people they actually cancel via an email)
They finally agreed to cancel and backdate.

But there is no way I will do business with sky again.

They clearly don't want people cancelling without giving themselves an opportunity to tempt them with offers to stay. Was 20 minutes of your time that much of an imposition? Most of your protracted conversation was over the date of cancellation being backdated to the time of your E-Mail.
I agree it could be simpler.

20 mins or 2 mins. Makes no difference. I chose to cancel my sky by email which sky clearly say you can do on their site. They wouldn't do this and I had to phone and on my time and at a cost to me have to have a conversation similar to a cold call, I did not wish to have. They could have phoned me but didn't . Just emailed to say my service would continue until I phoned them.
The title of this thread is can you cancel sky by email. So just added my experience.
