I have sometimes been disappointed that Martin Lewis sounds a bit naive about flight delay compensation issues. His reply to one reader's letter in the Mirror newspaper today is particularly irritating.

I couldn't agree more. Especially this statement

"The CAA is independent and has a pretty decent track record"

They aren't independent and they have a terrible track record.

    MSE Mod's

These days the MSE Forum's so big, it needs its own team to keep it running smoothly and help you get the most out of it. Martin is no longer involved in the Forum's day-to-day operations – that's our job. Of course with so many contributors, sometimes things need ironing out, and we're here to do that, so feel free to get in touch.

Perhaps the Mod's can pass on the message it's not that easy as most people find, and the CAA is a waste of time and are on the airlines side. Even better pass on Vauban's guide to Martin or ask him the read the forums.

Hi just wondering if anyone can help, recently delayed 27.5 hours in Gambia, which meant we missed NYE and part of New Years Day. TC rep greeted us with a letter confirming delay - it was due to some political unrest. Can I claim for this as we had additional costs fro dog kennels, parking etc... I cant seem to find a definitive answer Thanks in advance

You cannot claim for this as this is outside the airlines control.

Speak to your travel insurance and see what they will reimburse
  • Had a delay of Jet2 on the 3rd Jan due to a faulty door lock.

3 hours 17 mins which meant I had to pay an extra £56 for a transfer as I missed the original.

Should I sue or wait for the current lawsuit to finish?
  • Hi,

My partner and I were recently delayed flying Lyon to Birmingham, 4 hours in total. We had tickets bought for the train home, due to the delay we missed the last train. We either took a taxi or hire a car so we hired a car, the cost wouldn't have been much different either way.

I contacted the customer services stating everything and they have just agreed to compensate for the delayed flight. They have not agreed to the extra cost the we incurred (about £100) having to get back home from Birmingham late on a Saturday night.

The response I got from this was
With regards to your request for refunding your out of pocket expenses, the usual and recommended process for making such claims should be made directly through your personal travel insurance policy, the losses for your train travel and car hire are considered to be consequential.

I don't have travel insurance, what are my options? Can I go back to Flybe and ask them to take this further? The only person we asked was a steward that was on here way home after the flight and she said simply to get home then send the receipt for costs back to Flybe.

    Thanks for your help.

cyclingdave: unfortunately, the airlines are not liable for these "consequential delays" - however frustrating that it. Once they get you to the airport, their duty is done: even if their delays mean you miss trains or all other transport options.
  • Hi there, I hope you can help :)
I've been reading through the threads on here but I'm still unsure how to proceed.
Two members of my family took a PIA flight (PK792).from BHX Birmingham to Islamabad on Sunday 11th Jan. Flight took off around half an hour after stated time. It was diverted to Lahore due to bad weather. Passengers were kept in the departure lounge for a few hours. It seems certain tempers started rising due to the long delay as other planes were leaving Lahore. By this time, many planes had landed at Islamabad too. At 1PM, they were put on a plane. For the next six hours, the plane wasn't allowed to take off nor was anyone allowed to leave. No food was given for the next 11 hours, after the initial sandwich at the beginning. Phone calls were not offered (by this time, the delay had been around 12 hours) things only started moving when a few lads threatened to leave the plane by force and stand on the runways unless something was done.
The reason they were giving was that the pilot's shift had ended and another one was brought in by helicopter. I don't think it justifies locking around 300 passengers on a plane for hours.
The original arrival time at Islamabad was 6:25 am. They actually arrived after 6:30 pm.
Can anyone tell me how to proceed please? I'd like to put a complaint in, it's been an awful experience for all of us. To make things worse, Islamabad airport had no information on their website about the diversion. They just kept updating the arrival time from 06:25 to 09:50 to 14:00 to 18:00... Flightstats had no info either.
