Jam Roly Poly
8oz / 225g Self raising flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
pinc salt
5oz / 150g suet
3.5-5 fl.oz / 100-150ml milk
5-6 oz / 150-175g strawberry jam
Sift s.r. flour, baking powder & salt. Add suet & work to breadcrumb consistency.
Add milk a little at a time until soft texture formed but not sticky. Wrap in cling film & refrigerate for 20-30 mins.
Roll out into rectangle approx. 30 x 20cm or 12 x 8 inches. Spread jam on leaving a 1cm border & brush the edges with water or milk then roll up. Squeeze the edges to seal.
Wrap in greasproof paper very loosely, then in foil, also loosely & tie at either end with string (leave space for it to rise).
Steam for 2 hours, then slice and pour on gallons of custard. MMMMM0 -
Hi I have just dug out my wonderful 70s cook book for you so here goes!!! suet crust pastry
8 oz plain flour and 3 tsp baking powder OR
8 oz self raising flour
pinch salt
4 oz suet
cold water to mix
Sift flour(and baking powder if using) and salt into bowl ,add suet and toss lightly in flour until well mixed.Stir in sufficient water to bind into a soft but not sticky dough.
Roll out the pastry into a rectangle about 10x8 inches and spread evenly with jam, leaving a 1 inch border all the way around the edge.Fold the border over the filling (so the jam doesnt escape!!) and brush with water ,then rollup fairly loosly and press the edges together. Place this on a piece of greesed foil just big enough to come halfway up the roll and secure loosely with string.Cut 4 slits in the top of the roll to allow steam to escape and brush with milk. Then sprinkle with sugar .Bake in the oven 200c or gas mark 6 for 30 mins until well risen and golden.Serve hot with custard
I thought the baked version would be better as steaming takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours!!JAN GC- £155.77 out of £200FEB GC £197.31 out of £180:o. MARCH GC - out of £200

i made one of these the other day - i randomly found a packet in the cupboard and decided Roly poly pudding was the way to go.
I made the basic suet pastry (with a dash of sugar instead of salt)
then I rolled it out spread the jam on it - rolled it up put in on a greased baking tray in a 200 oven for around 30 minutes and we had it with cream and it was lovely! I didn't wrap it in foil and it tasted fine![Survey site stuff goes here]0 -
Here's a savoury one for suet [I always half a packet left over from making mincemeat]
Ratouille Style Roll [recipe from Mr T OB suet]
2 tbps oil/small red pepper chopped/small green pepper chopped [adapt veg as available]/ 1 courgette chopped/ 1 crushed garlic clove/ 2oz mushrooms chopped/ 230g tin toms/ 2 tbsp tom puree/ 2 tsp mixed herbs/ 8oz SR flour/, 4oz suet [veggie suet is fine], pinch salt
Preheat oven 190C. Grease foil on tray. Heat oil. Fry veg 5-10 min. Add tom and tom puree. Cook 10 mins until liquid evaporated. Mix salt, flour and suet. Add water to make a soft dough. Roll out 8"x11" oblong and place onto oiled foil. Place ratouille along one edge [longways] roll up & brush one edge with water to stick it. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 45 mins in the centre of the oven.

1 pack of rasins
1 pack of flower..
1 jar of jam
we were on an electric meter and had no credit so no electric..
we had an old rusty barbecue and some coal so we lit that and made a paste with the flower suet and rasisn...wraped it around a stick and cooke it over the coals..outside under the only street light in over 2 miles..we sat in the summer night ate our BRASSIC BATTER coated in jam and read poetry together.....

I really fancy that now!
It reminds me of some "bread" I made over 30 years ago. It was just (yes JUST) flour and water, to dough consistency, stuck on a stick and cooked over a bonfire.0
