When the kids were little they used to like baked sweet dumplings with some jam or syrup.
Just stir suet, sr flour and sugar together and mix with water to make a firmish dough. Put spoonfuls on a baking sheet and bake in a hot oven, about 180-200, not sure what that is gas but I would think about 6/7, until golden brown. Serve with jam or syrup.

aw thanks everyone you've given me lots of ideas!
I think might try and make the sweet dumplings and the bacon and leek pudding tonight
Never made it before so wish me luck.
For the basic suet pastry is it just suet, self raising flour, water and salt mixed together?
sorry i'm a numpty, i just mix the above to make dumplings0 -
KEZ the basic recipe for suet pastry to cook in the oven, or in a steamer or for dumplings is
8 oz S/R Flour
4 oz suet
1/2 teaspoon salt
cold water to mix
that will feed 4 people, but the proportions of suet to flour are the same whatever quantity of pastry you make.
Hope that helps, Cheers Lyn xxx.0 -
your a star lynn thank you!!!!!!
again thanks for all the ideas0 -
Pardon my french but I have s**t loads of suet in the cupboard. I have both vegetarian and none vegetarian when it was on a whoops very very cheap and to be honest, I've only used it to make a suet pud once.
We are trying to lose weight so I don't want to make terribly fatty foods and there are only two of use plus toddler. So I am not entirely sure what the best economical use of it is. At this rate I will have to chuck it out as its defo past its date on the packet but I cannot bring myself to.
Anyone else use Suet?Money money money.

I'm sure you could freeze it, maybe even in portions of the right size for recipes.
Maybe make up some mincemeat ready for Christmas and freeze that.0 -

To be honest, if you want to eat healthily, your best bet is to put the suet out for the birds...It's tough to use it to make anything too healthy...because whatever you make will have suet in it
That said, I make spotted !!!!!! quite often using this recipe:

3.5 minutes in the microwave and it's done....quicker than making the (optional) custard.
That recipe serves four generously, so I imagine a half-quantity would do for the 2.5 of you
Nothing wrong with the occasional treat, even when you're losing weight...and that recipe has quite a good ratio of good stuff : naughty stuff, once the suet's discounted0 -
