    Hi,
Was going to make rag puddings the other day, but couldn't face the kitchen being steamed up all day, so put on my thinking cap. Mixed the mince with chopped onion and thinly sliced mushrooms, added an oxo, a little water, salt and pepper. Made the suet pastry, and rolled it out into a rectangle shape. Then I spread the mince mixture almost up to the edges, and rolled it up like a swiss roll. Put it on a WELL greased piece of foil, wrapped it up just like a christmas cracker, and baked at gas mark 100-150 for about 2 hours. It was absolutely gorgeous. just the thing for cold winter days. ( you can gett low fat suet, but I haven't tried it, and it sounds like a contradiction in terms to me!)

i buy these too sometimes, but only for me. sadly the kids can read so know whats in them.  :-/
What would they make of 'Goblin' meat pies then? These are very cheap and surprisingly not that high in fat. Sainsbury's and asda do them, little boil in the tin things :P

I've got half a packet of (vegetarian) suet in the cupboard that really needs using up. Husband not keen on dumplings, and we are trying to limit puddings...
I bought it years ago because I used to make a bake with vegetables and a cheesy pastry on the top. Haven't got the recipe anymore though, can't really remember how to do it.
So does anyone have any ideas how to do something like that? Or anything else I can use it for (apart from dumplings, steamed pud and mincemeat). Thanks.

I would do what i am making for tea tonight.

Make a suet pastry and roll it out
fry off some onions and bacon
spread it over the pastry and roll up like a roly poly
Cook in the oven on 200c or until golden brown.
I serve it with mash and veg

    It is very filling.

The Tesco's own brand veggie suet have a similar recipe on the back except that they do the roly poly with a ratouille mix instead and it's delicious!

yesterday I made mealy pudding to use up some suet and oats. I mixed oats, chopped onion and the suet together and then steamed it in a plastic tub for a few hours. Its really yummy for dinner with bacon and tomatoes!
