  • Thanks. On Vaubans guide it looks like good news. EJ have confirmed their liability by offering standard compensation for cancellation so assume according to section 3.2 expenses incurred over the two days and hike from Gatwick to Manchester will be additional. First good news I've heard since pound devalued! We're worried the standard compensation would be a fob off but this is much more interesting ��. Cheers. J

    My son's Easyjet flight from Gatwick to Bologna was cancelled at the weekend with 12 hours notice. The reason given was an Italian air traffic control strike. My son was not offered a suitable alternative flight with Easyjet but managed to book a different flight with BA departing 22 hours later from Heathrow as considerable additional expense. I have since found out that this strike was pre planned and reported at the end of June (over 3 weeks prior to the cancellation) Can anyone advise if this means it should not be considered 'an extraordinary circumstance' meaning that my son could claim not just a refund but compensation for his additional costs? I have trawled the Internet and read the MSE article looking for answers to no avail. Many thanks if anyone can advise.

    Extraordinary circumstance are reasons that are completely outside the control of the airline so no compensation would be due in case of a strike irrespective of it being known in advance (sometimes these strikes are called off so airlines not to cancel flights when they are first mentioned)
    Has he spoken to his travel insurance to see if they will cover the additional expense?

    Thanks Caz3121. Yes he has contacted his travel insurance, I'm not sure of the outcome on that yet though as he is still away on holiday but I unfortunately I don't think it will cover all the expense of booking the new flight, lost train ticket & loss of one night in his hotel. He may have to just suffer the loss. I still feel that as Easyjet would have known about the strike he should have been warned of it earlier with an offer to change his flight.

    Btw flight EZY8578 27th June 2016 BCN-LGW was delayed by over three hours, I submitted a claim via their online form and the response was

    "Having checked the details of your flight EZY 8578, I can confirm that the reason for your disruption was due to crew issues. This event is classified as non-extraordinary under EC Regulation 261/2004 and you will therefore be entitled to a compensation of 250 Euros."

    and I have now received a cheque in the post.

    I posted a few days ago similarly. :j Their cheque is hopefully on its way. Personally I think there should be more compensation for a cancelled flight due to the airline's issues than just for a delayed flight of 3 hrs. We were cancelled 25/6 & next flight back was 28/6, thankfully we found out we were cancelled before we left for Alicante airport & have our own place in Spain also our own car but it was still quite a disruption.

    Hi,

    I was due to fly from Manchester to Copenhagen amidst the air traffic control strikes in France at the end of March.

    I arrived at the airport about 3 hrs before (I like a wander around duty free) and within minutes a delay had come up on the boards. The initial delay was 3hrs 35mins, then settled quickly at 3hrs 5 mins. This delayed departure time was constant for the five hours before the flight boarded. Vouchers were given out to us of £3 each.

    We were called to board at the delayed time and a good few people - 30 or so- did get seated on the plane but then the queue to board stopped moving. After 10mins there was an announcement apologising for the delay in boarding but it was due to not being able to locate the flight crew. After another 10mins at the boarding gate, the people on the plane already got off and Easyjet declared the flight cancelled.
    I was advised there were no other easy jet flights to the destination that weekend and that they would not financially cover me to board another airline to the same destination in the morning. So we were given no options for travel.

    The air traffic action was declared in the press 10 days before this flight. Easy jet made no reference to it nor any attempt to cancel it before the departure date.
    They delayed it and let people board the plane.
    A number of other planes left the same terminal to go to Copenhagen on the same day and managed it.

    Surely, they have no grounds for claiming this was an extraordinary event? I have made a claim and they have said I'm not entitled due to the industrial action. I have responded and suggested that all of their actions on the day suggest otherwise.

    What do you think? As others have pointed out on this thread, flights to Copenhagen don't go through french air space. Easy jet are having a laugh. How far do I push this to get a successful response?

    Hi Skob,

    I believe you have a very good case but you will probably have to follow the advise in Vaubans guide to get things moving yourself. How far you push it tho depends upon how motivated you are.

    A voucher for a measly £3 to cover the cost of a snack and a soft drink is a complete joke. I hope the CAA are taking note how EJ are taking the mickey out of passengers. If you have receipts for additional meals I would include them in your claim.
