I believe Waterford, the Irish Contact Centre, has closed. This is a real shame as they were most helpful and had experience - they didn't need to use the scripts!

If they give you notice of a price increase then you should be able to leave ?

I too have been a loyal customer of aOL since 1998 and up till now have been pleased with the service and pricing but the latest is a joke. Having tried to speak with at least 4 people from AOL I decided to write to the Chairman and AOL. I have already submitted a report to BBC Watchdog.

When you spoke to AOL about this did they offer you anything?
Will you move and if so can I ask who you are considering? :)

This is so true, if one managed to speak to Waterford they always seemed interested in keeping one happy, if one was unlucky enough to connect to the Indian call centre it was as if one was taking to a machine, not only that but I just could not understand what they were saying.

I am in a very similar position with aol. They did not offer me any alternative price but just said that my cost would go up to £25 a month.
I am trying to get confirmation from them that there will be no charge to close my account early, and am awaiting my MAC.
Living where I do in a rural area I do not have a lot of choice but am leaning towards BT (and yes I know they get poor reports, but so do AOL and I had no problems with them for the last 14 years).

I have been a happy customer since 2001 and yesterday received an email saying going up to £25 per month so will be requesting a MAC whats the best way to do this? it used to be the case that if you rang in the morning you got through to Ireland rather than India,is this still the case?

When I was leaving, I e-mailed an address I found within the AOL system. After 2 or 3 days without any reply, I again mailed them, pointing out that this was my 2nd e-mail, and got a reply with my MAC within a few hours.

At no time did I get a call from anyone/anywhere trying to make me an offer I couldn't refuse.

AOL UK is now actually CPW/TT but in some ways it's a bit sad that AOL has joined the list of companies who were at the very centre of the early internet days, but have since fallen by the wayside. There was a time when you could hardly pick up a magazine without an AOL cd falling out of it! How the mighty have fallen!!

I had this earlier today. I called AOL techy (lol) and they said it would be okay after 1pm. Sounds like they have a problem! Don't hold your breath.

Supatramp, I 100% agree with your comments.
I remember 1996 - Freeserve and dialup. That was when the net was new and exciting to me. Its now big business and almost controlled by Google and a a handful of isps.

I think you mean 1996? Freeserve did not start until around 1998. :)

I certainly would not discount an ISP just because of the modem they supply..... we all expect something for nothing these days and so that's why most ISP's supply a cheap basic modem. There's nothing to stop people buying the one they want and keep the free one as a backup.
