There's nothing generalising about BT's regular appearances at or near the bottom of many consumer surveys (Which, Computer Shopper, etc). I mentioned Plusnet because, in the absence of any LLU options, the OP can get exactly the same service delivery on the same network, but cheaper and with better CS.No free lunch, and no free laptop

TBH I have been considering BT internet as I have my land line through them anyway.
I have heard one or two bad comments about BT internet but am I right in concluding that in my case it makes little service difference to AOL? Given that we have no LLU in our exchange and AOL just buys access from BT would not my speed and service be the same, the only difference being that I pay BT rather than AOL?0 -
I'm not yet committed to move to any company but looking at BT. The drawback to looking around is that every ISP gets slated somewhere in the forums so how do you tell if one is better than the other.
Had a look at plusnet but I'm not keen on the router they supply (no gigabit ethernet) unless they allow you to upgrade to a better one.
Tried to do that with aohell a few years ago and support was just dire when I had line problems as I wasn't using there router0 -

Indeed quite ridiculous, I had the same with AOL when my service went down so I was forced to phone AOL support, when asked which router I was using I told them Netgear DG834GT they refused help as they only support the Netgear DG834G! fortunately it was a fault with BT who fixed it for me, but phoning AOL is one of the most frustrating and pointless things to do!0 -
Decline the router and supply your own. If you are tech-savvy enough to want to spec your own router, then you are not going to need their support-or you can get it on here instead.
Not very logical to let the router option determine your choice of ISP.No free lunch, and no free laptop

I have never been given the chance of a free router myself, when I first went BB I was given a BB modem which I quickly replaced with my own router.
I just want a decent service at a fair price, IMHO £25 for 2Mb is not a good deal.

But the ISP ultimately has no control over the line speed. The OP is getting 4MBps, if the line were adequate or the property nearer the exchange, that would be nearer 8Mbps at least. No free lunch, and no free laptop

The simple fact of the matter is that online forums are awash with complaints of poor/bad CS, there are very few companies in the technology world who differ.
There's also always a lot of hearsay spoken when people actually want personal knowledge/experience.
When I was with AOL, I had no real complaint about the actual internet service/experience and I seldom had to contact their CS, it was latterly their regularly increasing cost that motivated me to move elsewhere. And additionally there was no notification of these increases either.
The best speed I got from AOL was just over 2, but after the 10 day settling in period with BT it had increased/improved to 4. Nowadays, I get 5.5/6.
When I initially joined BT, I got a version 3 router, 2 filters, and the faceplate thingy, all free.David.0 -
I too have been a loyal customer of aOL since 1998 and up till now have been pleased with the service and pricing but the latest is a joke. Having tried to speak with at least 4 people from AOL I decided to write to the Chairman and AOL. I have already submitted a report to BBC Watchdog.0
