  • To get a decent android Tablet, you will be looking at spending over £300 and thats close to apples £400 (£340 referb) price for an iPad. I myself own an iPad and iPhone (not a Mac, cant stand them), and find them brilliant. I started uni with my old iPhone and all my mates (we are on a tech course) had android phones, most of them bar 2 have iPhones now after seeing how good mine are.

(sorry to sound like an apple fanboi, god I hope im not)

Android have just released android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. which is optimised for tablets. You will want to find a tablet that will be able to run this OS as android 3 wasn't great for tablets as it was made for mobile phones. But as you say, you already have android phones so thats not a problem. I think you will have a problem getting an iPad as you probably wont have itunes or itunes accounts ect.

But I highly recommend an iPad. Other forum users might be able to point you in the direction of a good android tablet

    Hope this helps

Shame you missed the Dixons and Currys have been selling the Motorola xoom for under £250 last week they been a big hit on hotukdeals. Larger screen than a ipad and have gps unlike basic ipad (not 3g model) it doesn't have 3g but will have latest new android os first its been sent out now

I got one myself excellent and has a long battery life well over 8 hours although they reckon it can last 10. I even have mine set up as a satnav

edit looks like price has jumped up to 329

Asus prime is probably the best tablet money can buy, but its way overpriced imo (as are most tablets over £250)

Otherwise the Sony S tablet for £299 is pretty good, the Lenovo A1 is a great price at £149 on amazon, and there are deals for the asus transformer popping up for under £300 which is pretty good too.
  • darn that motorola xoom sounds good.. shame i missed it =(
  • I'm looking at treating myself to a tablet too. Everytime I am in the Metro Centre I have a wee play with the ones in Currys but just can't decide which one to get.

Is it really worth paying extra to get a 3g model?

  • Not a Newbie... Its really up to what you already have and how you will use it.

If you will use it at home and at work/uni then you wont need 3G.
If you will use it whilst commuting or out and about you will need it, but there are other ways to get around this. You can either:
Tether off of your phone if your service provider lets you and you have sufficient download limit on it, i with 3 on the one plan and this is how I get wifi whilst out and about.
Sign up to BTopenworld and you can access their wifi free, but you will need to be within range of one of there millions of routers.

If you opt for iPad, may be worth waiting till till march or april, ipad 3 should be out around then, so may be able to grab a bargain.

Thanks. I want to be able to use it at home, at work, out and about and when we are on holiday. So I thought a 3g model would be the best option.

I'm with giffgaff at present and not sure they allow tethering. Don't plan on signing up for a new contract as I have just bought my SG2.

neilwoods - thanks but not going down the ipad route. I have the ipod touch, which is great but I really prefer android.

So far my £2 coin tablet fund is at £438.

  • My aunt and uncle have an iPad and an android tablet respectively.
Now, it depends on the individual really but they were both saying they wish they never got the iPad because of compatibility issues. They said that everything works on their Android but the iPad has to use iTunes and i this and i that and you have to pay for more things for example they got loads of free ebooks and could only put them on the Android and there were many other examples of things you can get free versions of for Android but not for iPad.

Sorry, I know his is probably not the best written piece of advice!

Personally, from what I've seen you can get things that are the same spec as the iPad for a lot cheaper. It's spending money for a brand.

Plenty of free books also available for the iPad. Simply download Calibre(free) and use that to put your books onto the iPad.
