Sorry if this is hijacking or a little off-topic, but I thought it was related enough to add on here!

I'm considering venturing into the world of "tablets", but don't want to spend much money lol. A friend bought a very cheap android tablet from ebay for £40 or thereabouts, then pulled some magic on the operating system, and says its brilliant. I really only want one for watching iplayer and a bit of web surfing, so nothing too taxing. Would it be possible for me to get a cheapie and would it work as well for me?

    Any views gratefully appreciated.

the screens may not be as vivid and the touch screen so responsive

Custardy thanks very much, it was something like that I was looking at on ebay. The description on there talks about Uberoid, is that some sort of inferior Android? And as you point out, I need flash for what I want to use it for, but I think my mate was able to get flash onto it - I'll check with him. £45 for that and I won't worry too much if it doesn't last forever

    well check with him
ROMs are easy to find with a little knowledge, though given that seller appears to have tried
you might wish to double check

Android have just released android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. which is optimised for tablets. You will want to find a tablet that will be able to run this OS as android 3 wasn't great for tablets as it was made for mobile phones.

I was under the impression Android 3 - Honeycomb was designed specifically for Tablets and 4 -Ice Cream Sandwich is a cross device platform

    Correct.

A lot of the cheaper tablets run Android 2.2 or 2.3 which were designed for phones.

Thought so, our Archos 70 runs 2.2 and its a great bog standard (if that makes sense) tablet for surfing and FB/Ebay etc - and getting it for less than £100 before Christmas was nice.

Now deciding between the latest Gen Archos or save my pennies for the 8.9 or 7.7 Samsung for my next toy :-)
