The difference is that it's not very clear just what throttling NTL/TW will be doing and when. I believe that both NTL/TW already have a FUP but it was never enforced so if this is true that means you wouldn't be able to get out of any contract as the FUP already existed when signing up.
I've been with NTL for several years now, and during all of that period, they've had a FUP, and a standard term in the TOC about throttling high users. Only once did I have a problem with that (I experimented running my own server for a while.......not really a good idea  DoS attacks from NTL all the time to stop me), but that was understandable.
In the main, I've had no problems with throttling, and use around 60-80Gb per month on downloads, along with an average of 80-90 hours gaming per month. I can't see there being any great changes, but if there is.....
as you said.....the term is already there, so there'll be no option to terminate and withdraw from the contract.0 -
My mum is on AOL as well (silver) so gonna call up for her at the weekend and get her on this £9.99 deal, her own contract ended about 6 months ago so she is free to go! But for the amount of time she is online and she uses the chat rooms at AOL it's better for her!0

Just rang aol and got the £9.99 wireless deal. The chap tried to tell me there was no such thing and it was £14.99 and not posable as the computer wouldnt allow such a transaction.I told him i didnt care waht his computer said but i know you do a £9.99 contract as my friends got it.He went off to talk to his supervisor and told me i could have it but pay £25 for my wireless router.I told him my friend didnt. So after about 20 minutes i got it free.
Slightly confused but the guy sent me an email and i have to reply to say when my wireless router has arrived and then he will set me up with the £9.99 deal.Did anyone else do this???? i didnt have to do anything like that when i changed from dial up to broadband.0 -
Well if people are so anxious to leave aol, can they show me an isp that will charge £9.99 per month (ok maybe 1mbit speed) that doesn't have a cap, just a fair usage policy, which to me is better than be capped. I can't see any isp that will do this deal, in fact I think for maybe the same service I would have to pay bt £26.99 a month after first 3 months with a cap of 40gb. Bt must be one of the most expensieve isp's around.0

They say they want £95 (!) for the hardware if I cancel and decide I want to keep it.
So it looks like I'm staying.
£9.99? I'm in month 3 of my contract paying £14.99 for 512kbit (meaning to call them about that, Tiscali gave me 1mbit).
If it's going for £9.99 I'll need to give them a call.....0 -
Hiya
After the email from aol explaining all I emailed them explaining that currently as far as I am aware I agreed to an unlimited unmetered service not one which you may apply capacity-based limitations. I recieved this reply....
Dear Member,
Thanks for contacting AOL. It's our aim to help you get the best possible online experience, and you can get further assistance at any time from Live Help, and the dedicated Help Channel. In response to your earlier query I hope you find the following information useful.
We appreciate that you've taken the time to allow us an opportunity to handle this for you. We truly apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused you.
With the increasing popularity of our broadband service this year and the increase in broadband usage, it is necessary to include a Fair Use policy on the AOL service so we can ensure the network is protected and optimised for all AOL Broadband users.
In order to protect the network, we are reserving the right to impose speed or other restrictions at certain times on some AOL subscribers. This is becoming a standard practice by ISPs in order to manage significant broadband demand. We anticipate notifying affected AOL subscribers in the event of imposing any form of restrictions.
There are still no set limits on the amount of data you may download and upload on your AOL service. This is purely about introducing a Fair Use policy to protect the network.
If you require any further help, please feel free to visit our online support at AOL Keyword: Help. This offers full information on all aspects of your AOL account, with answers to the most frequently asked questions and links to other helpful resources.
Remember
There's a dedicated team of representatives trained to answer your questions from 8am to midnight, seven days a week, on 0870 320 2020. See AOL Keyword: Support Me for details of call charges.
Kind regards

I just rang aol because i have been with them for a couple of years at £17.99 on silver.
I told them i wanted to cancel because i had a friend who had been given the same package at £9.99 with a wireless router.
He would not budge on the router unless i pay £25 but let me have the £9.99 a month.
Is there anything else i can do?
Or should i just leave it at that,im still glad to be saving £7.99 a month thanks to reading this post.0 -
They may already of tied you into another 12 months if you already accepted the 9.99 offer.
I am not sure about other isps, but i know when i took the 9.99 offer it was on condition that i stayed for a furth 12 months.
Sounds like aol is getting a bit tight with the routers, maybe because it is being sold to carphone perhaps.0
